Kinja'd!!!

Why isn’t green a more popular choice?

Kinja'd!!!

I would prefer a Benz in this shade.

Kinja'd!!!

BMW used to offer this shade on the E90, but did away with it after the facelift. I actually really like it. They went to this shade of green, which I’m not that much of a fan.

At least someone shares my views, that might be my favorite color I’ve seen on the M3. Green has been my favorite color as far as I can remember.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

I like this as well, too bad it had to be ordered an individual color.

Kinja'd!!!

Seems you can get a green F82 as well, but once again has to be ordered as an individual color.

I love green cars too, and wish there were more of them. But I think the reason why is that shades of green really tend to be era-specific and can negatively date a car. Maybe it hurts their resale value and that’s why people stay away. But I wouldn’t let that stop me. I’ll always take color over some boring neutral shade.

Green is the absolute worst color for a road-going car. I am on board with BRG on British marques, but it’s wholly unacceptable on any other.

I agree that certain shades can date a car. I think you’re right about a lot of people do avoid the color and go for a more neutral one for resale value. Ironically making the odd colored ones more rare and possibly more desirable. I would pay slightly more for a car that isn’t silver or black.

I agree that more green would make the world a better place. I the only thing I can think is that people have widely divergent opinions on which green looks good, and that makes it difficult for an automaker to choose which to sell. It’s not as much of a “safe” color as others.

As for sports cars, I’m willing to call hot hatches and their peers sports cars, especially the better ones, as opposed to “sporty” cars like the TC and modern eclipse. The GTI and Si can actually get it done on track. But to each his own!

It’s a silvery green but I’m counting it! This is actually funny timing. On my way to work yesterday I started counting cars that were not white/black/gray. Probably only 20 or 30. Most where dark red or a blue that was close to silver. It’s a shame how boring the average color palette has become. Even the colors like red and blue are so toned down, they might as well be W/B/G. My ideal scenario would be like driving through an acid trip on the way to work. Purples, greens, reds, yellows, real blues, orange, etc. I might not need coffee in the morning that way! At least pony/muscle cars are starting to offer cool colors again. If only people would start buying them...

I can’t comment on the last series of XKs, but I daily an X308 XJ8, which is basically an XK8 on a longer wheelbase.

Basically, I would avoid MY 97-00, as they had Nikasil lined engines that liked to shed. I’ve heard that if they’re still on the road by this point, then they’re probably fine, but I wouldn’t risk it.

‘01s have normal linings, but still have plastic timing chain tensioners that need to be replaced ASAP. In theory, any XK8s on the road should have had that replaced with aluminum by now, but if there isn’t documentation, that needs to be bargained into the price (~$1400). I think by ‘02 you’re golden, and personally, I think the late models (‘03 up?) look substantially better.

Beyond the tensioners, the Jag V8 is ridiculously solid. The real killer of these cars is the transmission. The supercharged cars have a solid transmission, but the N/A cars have one that’s pretty prone to failure.

Other than that, the weaknesses are cooling related. The impellor and thermostat housing are plastic and need to be upgraded to aluminum, or else the car will start blowing hoses (ask me how I know). There’s a ton of aftermarket support, and the parts are under $80, but for the thermostat, you either need the world’s rarest metric crowfoot or you have to drop the engine, so that’s a pain.

For me, by far the biggest expense has been suspension related, but I don’t think the PO of my car ever replaced it. The front shocks are apparently pretty doable, but even hardcore DIYers seem afraid to touch the rears. The control arms are also a huge pain.

I would definitely recommend finding a mechanic nearby who specializes in Jags. They tend to be way too quirky to entrust to a general mechanic.

It’s also worth checking out Jaguarforums.com, as people there are hugely helpful and super obsessive (I can almost guarantee you that for any problem you’d ever have, someone has put together a full write up with photos in a PDF).

Quite the opposite, actually. Early engines had Nikasil linings that sucked and plastic timing chain tensioners that liked to break, but beyond that, those engines are ridiculously solid. They debuted in 1997 and are still used in Jags today.

I killed mine, I did my first oil change on it. Except instead of draining the oil I drained most of the transmission fluid. Went to get the car out of the garage and it wouldn’t move, and wasnt running right, because it had 9 quarts of oil in it. In a panic I ran to Autozone and bought a quart of trans stopleak. I got It into reverse and drive on that, but it wouldn’t go into second, and it was blowing smoke out the oil cap. Finally my Dad checked the dipsticks and realized what I had done. I got everything “fixed” but must have done some permanent damage to the trans. A few months later it lost Revers and neutral.

Thanks! It’s not a perfect match, as I plastidipped the top before I bought the wheels. But the top will need to be re-dipped or painted, so I’m going to try to get a closer match when that happens.
