Kinja'd!!!

But you’ve still gotta kill some cones.

Kinja'd!!!

My Blizzaks are at around 50-55% tread depth now, and it’s really starting to show. Had a lot less traction than in the last couple winters. Looks like I might be swapping the tires out before the winter is over. I gotta stay competitive, and since my driving sucks I need all the help I can get! Haha

The white wheels look pretty great with a red FR-S.

My Blizzaks are in the same spot. It’s crazy how much the snow performance drops off once you hit 50%.

Blizzaks have a super soft outer layer that wears faster than the bottom ~40% of the tread depth. You’re probably either through the outer layer or will be soon...

Thanks! Yeah, I really like the look. They’re definitely “ten footers” though. My buddy I bought them from had just rattle canned them, and the paint is really dirty and flaking/cracking a lot. I’ll probably repaint them over the summer.

Indeed. I’ll probably switch to General Altimax Arctics in the next month or so, simply because you can’t beat the performance for the money. Most cars there were running Generals.

Yep, that’s exactly what it is. They’re awesome for that first section, then very ‘meh’ after that.

I’ll likely switch to Generals, although I’m considering giving the ICE-X XI3s a shot too. I’d love to try some hakkapeliitta R2s, but they’re just too expensive.

Snow tires add +5 hp.

That’s good to know. My brother had those on his Firebird, but it got totaled before he ever got to use them in the snow.

With your application, I’d look at some serious winter tires... Since where I live doesn’t freeze much and I’d rather get longer tread life, I’m planning to order in a set of Nokian Hakkapeliitta WRG3 All-Weather tires for my next set. They’re winter tires that you can run all year if you wanted to, but I’d only run them when it was too cold for my summers...

General Altimax Arctics are a great winter tire, one of the best deals for performance per dollar you’ll find. Most of the cars out there were running them. Blizzak WS80s and X-ICE XI3s will probably have a bit more grip, but marginally so for the money. Hakkapeliitta R2s are supposed to be the holy grail of non-studded winter tires, but they’re very pricey. I’d like to try them one year, but right now it’s not worth the extra money to me.

Some of the most fun you can have in any car.

Where was this? Sick children prevented me from being able to finish the tow bar install on the RallyMetro over winter break. I gotta get that done to try out those used snow tires I got for it.

Lake DuBay in Wisconsin, about a three hour and forty-five minute drive from Evanston. Look up Central Wisconsin Sports Car Club, Fox Valley Sports Car Club, and Wisconsin Autosports Group on FB. They’re the three organizers who put on the closest events.

Sweet! Thanks!

Any particular events you’re planning on doing? It’d be nice to know somebody there.

As many as I can! lol

The next one is this Sunday, but I can’t make it. There should be quite a few more this winter still. I’ll shoot you a message when I plan on going. Karl will be going to some too.

Bugeye WRX rims?

My dad has a set of Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8s on his BRZ and they are the gnarlyest set of snow tires I have ever seen..

Yep!

I’d love to try a set. It’s just so hard to spend track/autox tire money on winters. haha

I wouldn’t be able to make it this Sunday anyways. Yeah, let me know when you’re going.

They are quite good. Our Outback might be the best when there’s 6 inches of snow on the ground but you hardly notice ice in the BRZ. I’m a bit more willing to spend money on snows because I will probably get 4 seasons before I need to replace them. The Blizzaks on my old outback (which is now my sister’s car) are 4 or 5 years old at this point and still gripping strong. They are going to expire before they wear out, though they are getting close to that 50% cliff.

Yeah, if I didn’t do the ice racing they’d last much longer. haha
