How much does Ford hate the Bronco renders that are going around? We all know (even if we still are holding on to some hope) that it’s going to basically be the Everest, just with a refreshed look. Especially with this bit of info now.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

We all want it to look like this

Kinja'd!!!

Or this even

Kinja'd!!!

But we are all going to be disappointed by Ford. Fortunately, it will probably still sell well even with all the fan boys crying out in angst.

I for one am thrilled that it wont look like the renders. It just means fewer brahs will pick one up and lightbar the hell out of it with their billit grills. At least with the Everest we’ll get a sensible wagon with some legit chops for off road duty.

Like I said in my post about the Bronco, the less fanservice-y it is, the better it will likely sell.

Rugged, body on frame outdoorsy alternative to the Escape? They’ll sell millions. Retro throwback loveletter to fanboys? Huge first year followed by misery and failure.

They were able to go retro with the Mustang because A: the Mustang never went away, B: it was a way to establish that they were returning the Mustang to its roots and C: they didn’t wallow in it and treated it like a reboot instead of a nostalgia model.

They can’t do this with the Bronco because A: it’s been gone for 20 years, and will have been gone for 24 by the time it comes back, B: it had never really strayed that far from its roots while they were still making it, and don’t have anything to return to and C: it’ll be an outlier, the only full-retro car in the range, and would have no choice but to wallow in it.

yup to all. Retro is the wrong direction entirely.

I just hope it gets a little more of an aggressive look than the current Everest. To your other point, the bros are gonna get a bro vehicle anyways and light bar the hell out of it. They just have fewer options

The fewer the better in my opinion. I do think Ford will spice up the exterior a bit, especially for the max off road package.

It’s actually gonna sell in volumes, instead of being a niche market vehicle.

which is a good thing for everybody, meaning the the aftermarket will actually make things for them. Ford will make money. and the people get a rwd based suv from ford again.

As much as I love the retro Bronco render, I understand it would never be a long term winner. On the other hand the Atlas Bronco render looks great, just make it a 4-door instead of 2 and maybe tone down the masculinity just a bit. I hope the refresh they are doing to the Everest goes in the direction of the Atlas concept front end. I don’t think the current Everest looks bad, it just looks too much like a Toyota Highlander in my opinion.

yup. Though to be fair, if it was F150 based the same would still be true. That being said, the more off road capable touring wagons in the market, the better.

to be fair the Expedition is based on a F150 and was the real replacement to the Bronco

Thats true, though it does have a completely unique rear end and suspension.

Kinja'd!!!

I’m one of the apparent few who doesn’t like the render going around, at all. I think it looks like it was hastily punched out of a fiberglass mold in Brazil or South Africa. The one I’ve pictured above is MUCH more like it, I think.

The Bronco name has a lot of cachet. It’s basically the Mustang of SUV’s. The problem is that Ford did to the Bronco in 1990 (for the Bronco II) and 1996 what they were planning to do to the Mustang in 1986. So there’s an aspect of starting over and anxiety about mishandling the brand.

Between the Reddit AMA and the render being splashed literally everywhere, I think there’s probably a war going on inside Ford over the heart of the Bronco project.

I think one side in Ford wants to reduce their risk by increasing volume of the Everest by adding it to our market.

The other side in Ford, I’m guessing, sees the Bronco name as belonging to a special vehicle, and understands that expectations are high.

The Reddit AMA might have merely been a test forum for planners at Ford to observe reaction to prevailing plans before they pass the point of no return.

Few can pull off nameplate transitions from one storied vehicle configuration to another. Chrysler pulled it off with the LX Charger and 300 sedans. But for every transition that goes well, there are 2 that go like the L-Body Charger or the LH 300M.

Ford shouldn’t risk denigrating the Bronco name by offering it on a 4Runner competitor. If they want a 4Runner competitor, they should offer one. But they should call it Everest, I think. And let the Bronco be its own special Wrangler-fighting thing. All using the same Ranger/Everest platform.

Why? Who says we want it to be a full size like the 2nd gen Bronco?

Personally I’d rather have a smaller one like the first gen. More off-roadable because it’s not the size of a house going down a trail.

As much as I’d like to see that too I just can’t see it happening. Ford’s not going to introduce a true Wrangler competitor even if they say they are bench marking it. It’s really going to be a 4Runner competitor like you said.

Yeah, the trouble is, the Wrangler is doing much greater volume than the 4Runner.

This is one of those situations where the seemingly safer choice is the one most likely to return the least.
