This morning I was behind a ‘12 F-350 Super Duty with the 6.7 Powerstroke, identical to the one pictured. It was super icy out, and at one point we got to a hill and the truck lost traction and stopped moving forward despite being in 4WD. He slid around sideways for a moment, then stopped for a second after bouncing off the curb, then proceeded up as though nothing had happened. Does the F-350 have a locking differential? And is locking the differential likely what he did?

The F series has a locking diff option, but its electronically selectable. Likely it was traction control kicking in.

If you’re sure he was in 4wd to start with, that’s about all that could have happened. Barring some magnificent traction control, which I don’t buy. Especially since he actually stopped in the first place.
Though to be technical he might have had nothing to do with it... it could have been an auto locker.

I think limited slip diffs are available, but even so equipped if traction is poor enough you’ll just slip all four wheels. It doesn’t help that most medium duty truck tires of load range E or greater just suck in snow period. I couldn’t get a Ram 5500 flatbed display moving in a snowed in parking lot even with a 6000# weight on the flatbed.

I am 100% sure he was in 4WD because the truck crabbed sideways. If he was in 2WD it would’ve fishtailed.

That is still possible in 2wd if he happened to be countersteering a little, but you’re probably right.

It sounds like he was in Auto 4WD or 4 High when he was spinning. When he came to a stop, he probably moved it into 4 Low and took back off.

My guess he was in 2wd, then went to 4wd. Our F350 acutally has a lever on the floor. Cool thing though is that it has a center diff lock too. So if shit is really bad you can hit that button.

Yes they have electronic locker. Hit the switch on the dash for all the tractions
