Given the popularity of King Platinum Luxury Ranch Edition trucks on the market, I kind of assumed finding a truck with a bench seat would be:
A. Impossible
B. Relegated to only the crappiest trim levels or only in regular cab models.
I am pleased to report that not only could I find one of the 5 trucks with bench seats, but I found bench seats in ALL the half ton 4 door trucks I looked at and not only that but I could get them with some decent, if not all, of the fancier options. Sure it locks you out of some stuff but I was able to get all the stuff I wanted. Even still, they all ended up being $41,ooo trucks.
All the same, it feels nice to know that even with the relatively sparse selection from Toyota and Nissan that you can get a 4 door 6 person truck these days.
Backstory: My brother in law’s family is 6 people and he wants a truck for family surfing and adventures out west, trying to find a 6 seat truck with 4wd, and in decent shape has been proving difficult (mostly due to the lack of search refinements). He wants a 1st gen Tundra but those are very tricky to find in 4 door 6 seat 4x4 configuration

I’ve noticed that most automakers have given up on the idea of the basic work truck and gone “if you want someting basic and usable buy our van”. It sucks, since while trucks and vans are both great tools, they’re not the same tools for the same job.
On the topic of vans, though, one of the great internet rabbit holes is the Ford Transit configurator. The options have options. It’s nuts.

All their kids combined weight like 200 lbs. Seriously, they are all tiny, they drove out to Utah from California for a week in a 1st gen tundra without complaints. The new trucks are cavernous compared to that thing.

A few days ago I saw an Avalon XLS with bench seats, which is a pretty rare find. The bench seats made up about 30% of total production and the XLS is even harder to find with the bench, probably 20% of the XLS’s have them.

Every full-size truck offers a 40/20/40 up front on their mid-trim. That’s about 1/3 of the business in the shop where I work.

Once you start getting into the shit like the computer in the dash that lets you handle dispatch for the fleet and all the shelving options in the back of the Transit you notice that half an hour has passed and you’ve been configuring a van and gotten the same enjoyment out of it that you get from rolling a new D&D character or making a new Warhammer army list.

it really doesn’t though, even though its a huge center console you don’t really loose out on much with the bench. I drove around a 9 seat burb for years and it was great...it even got me free donuts once.

Spent hours chasing down a (not my problem) elecrical problem on a super duty yesterday. Took some effort to convince him it wasn’t in the column (where I had been) but in the door latch. Radio stays on because widget in driver’s door latch is bust. That’s what trucks are coming to. That latch still works as a latch, but not as a radio turner offer.
off topic, but at least you can still get a bench.

I’ve honestly been surprised by the sheer percentage of trucks on the market that have a front bench seat....
You can even still buy a new Tahoe with a front bench seat. Now that’s pretty awesome.
