After work today I’ll be heading over to my girlfriend’s mom’s house to help them dig out my girlfriend’s Honda Rebel (her mom claims it’s a Shadow but there never was a Shadow 250) 250. Really looking forward to it. I love tiny cruiser-style bikes like this and the SO and I are looking forward to learning to ride on it. Supposedly there’s a spare engine and trans in the garage as well that I can refresh a little and dump in the bike, as the trans that’s in there now has no 2nd gear. Should look similar to the picture, except dirty.

I found that the Rebel 250 was too small for me, when I took my MSF class at the Honda dealer. But, they had Nighthawk 250s, which were adequately sized, so that worked.

I’m 5'6" so... probably perfect for me. I find Miatas to be roomy so hopefully all the bits will fall right into place on a tiny bike

I’m 5' 6" and started out on a V-Star 250, which is set up almost the same way. No complaints about riding position, but the seat could be more comfortable.

If I remember correctly the engine and trans are one piece you’d have better luck replacing 2nd alone. Great learner bike though, just keep it interesting for yourself so you don’t want to move up too quickly.

take the MSF course. It’s the best way to learn and cheap. You can learn on your own, but you’ll be taught some things that help immediately. I guarantee you’ll benefit from something you’d otherwise not learn on your own for potentially years of riding. Those little things make it worth it.

Yeah, they’re one piece. If I can find the spare powerplant I’ll probably clean and re-jet the carb, change the oil, check compression, etc. and clean it up real nice then dump it in the bike once my girlfriend and I have progressed past the “oh god what do I do” stage of riding/falling over.

They are a good little bike, and since they have a long production history there is a lot of stuff available for them. In addition to Honda, you might try Jack’s Rebel Warehouse if you need parts. There are a couple of good forums if you want some additional advice on keeping the little bike running. I’ve had everything from Rebels to a 1500 Vulcan and a Ducati Monster... and now I have Rebel No. 4 in the garage. Yes, they are underpowered, but otherwise they are a fun, reliable, economical motorcycle.

Oh, and +1 on the MSF course. It is well worth the money, and will give you some good experience - in a controlled environment - with qualified instructors who are very adept at passing along the not-so-intuitive skills of riding a bike on the street. Ride safe...

Don’t worry about the compression, it’s a Honda...jk. Good on ya a great checklist for that bike many people forget about cleaning carbs and btw NEW GAS. Can’t tell you how many “it’s been sitting for 3 months and won’t start right away” I’ve heard.

Oooh, yeah. Probably clean the tank out as well. Swish it out with some clean gas and then let some diesel sit in it for a couple days to let the detergents work. A tank that small and easy to remove there’s really no excuse not to clean it.

Go to a Honda motorcycle dealer and ask for the Honda brand Carb cleaner spray. A tad pricy but it does wonders for clearing bad gas!! Another note some dealers won’t sell it direct to customers...they are stupid.

Wondered if you would see that haha! Ya could do a lot worse. I have been riding an old dirtbike again trying to get ready to get a bike soonish.
