Kinja'd!!!

Brought my Golf TDI to the dealer for my lease termination.

I asked the dealer if they’re shipping these cars somewhere they are still legal. He said as far as he knows they are getting scrapped.

I hope that’s not the case.

You were a good car. Sorry I brought you to your death.

They aren’t allowed to export them without fixing them per their settlement terms, but as noted, VW recently announced that a fix for the newest engines has been approved (a software update and some hardware replacements. When fixed, the cars should have the listed performance and economy, but will have slightly higher DEF usage). It sounds like the fix is cheap enough that VW will do it on the buyback cars. I still wouldn’t be shocked if they are exported after repair, rather than resold here, given the negative perception of TDI these days.

2 1/2ish.

1982 240D which needs some structural mending, but runs fine.

2001 Yukon XL which trucks along nicely

2002 Lexus LS430 which is amazing in most regards

RIP torque-y, exceptional mileage cheater. Shame they had to go because of greedy engineers.

I wouldnt be surprised if they get new powertrains and are sold as either leases or “pre-owned” certified cars.

A good portion of the TDIs are kept extremely well. In a sense, the omission of the urea systems meant its a lot harder for owners to take bad care of the powertrain. Getting scrapped for parts may be okay, but overall the situation is unfortunate.
