Drove home from job 1, fed my pets, got back in the car to drive to job 2 and it won’t start. It won’t do anything. No alternator warning, no low battery warning, cables are still attached. I’m going to try a new battery tomorrow, I guess (it’s 4 years old), but is there anything else I’m not thinking of? Too stressed to logically think through this at the moment.

Also, roadside won’t jump it because it’s “electric.” I just can’t even right now.

Funnily enough, Tercel battery is also dead and was awaiting a jump from the Fiat. Radio drains the battery when the car is off and I didn’t find out until too late.

Arrggh!

Best wishes with that and everything, hopefully you’re rolling again soon :)

(apologies, I know jack about EV’s; like, even less than dino-power cars lol and only have encouragement, sadly no “wisdom”)

Tear out the radio. My tape deck doesn’t work and I think only one speaker functions. Join me in silence — and by silence I mean road noises, rattles, and a tiny motor working way too hard BRRRRRRRRRR [wheeze]

Terminals in good shape? Also many have a main fuse.

That’s one of the few I’ve never done dash surgery on. Does it have an immobilizer or aftermarket remote start?

Did you accidentally kill the battery? If it’s cold enough, a discharged battery will freeze, burst the cells, and die. Generally you can get the appearance of a charge on them but it doesn’t last very long. If a passing stranger or not so stranger can give you a boost, or you can get it there through other means (like unbolting it and carrying it there) most parts stores will charge and test the battery for free. They can also test your charging system, although generally the probe to the cigarette lighter they like isn’t the most reliable way.

I’d make sure the battery is the issue before shelling out for a new one. They’re expensive.

If it’s not horrible to do, check the ground strap on the starter. My MINI melted one and it was exhibiting things very similar to a blown battery. IIRC it did actually blow the battery when the ground strap went.

Oh OK thanks for the info

True, this wouldn’t help tonight but if u r flat stranded with no assist, jumpers, or charger, maybe take out the battery and carry it indoors for the night?

idk for sure but if its just weak or partly discharged but not “daid,” as they say around here, it *might* help

if auto, hold the key over in start and run the shifter through the gears (neutral safety switch.) if manual, follow the stalk the clutch pedal is on, up top there will be a little press switch. if out of whack, and the clutch pedal isn’t actuating it, car no start. If this is the case it will roll start with a dumping of the clutch. Had it since new? I find all kinds of nightmares (mostly undead command starts) in peoples dashes. does the dash light up with the key? Could be the starter itself. (I have to whack my toyota starter occaisionally with a ball pien)

if you can see starter from underneath, give it a few taps with a wrench.

From what you are describing, it’s totally dead right? No lights, radio or anything.

If that is the case, 99% sure it’s a bad battery connection. Grab the battery clamps and wiggle them and like magic, the battery will work and the car will start!

Then it’s time to clean and tighten the terminals.

The two things that I would check is the connector on your battery and the connection on your starter. I would pop them both off then put dielectric grease on all connections.

Hmmm. that main fuse should be in line with the positive battery cable, probably visible if you pull up the red flappy thing (just guessing) should be a 80 to 120 or so fuse. I chased a radio that wouldn’t turn off all the way to a door latch today. (want radio off, new latch. that’s what cars are coming to. ) do you have a test light or meter? I enjoy this sort of thing, and am now curious.

You happen to have a volt meter? If so check the voltage of the battery, if it’s still 12v, there’s probably something else wrong.

My M3 tells me it needs a new battery, but I don’t want to spend the money while I have no job :/

I’d check the main relay. Went out on my Integra a while ago and similar issue. Acted like a dead battery. Idk about the fiat, but it’ll probably be more of a mini computer than a typical relay. Since it controls multiple things at startup.
