Shop around a bit more for other alternatives. Have you driven the Santa Fe yet?

The feeling you should have is one of “okay, I don’t like it, I should approach my wife with my concerns about this vehicle and propose alternatives”.

See if you can get her to go for a Kia Sorento. The 2015 are remarkably stout and (seemingly) hated by the market, a perfect combination for a low-priced but dependable car.

i went with the happy wife happy life when we went car shopping. I want to burn the fucking thing to the ground (Nissan Quest) I’d go full throttle at Bargaining. I know I should have. Ford Flex all the way.

Haven’t driven it, no. However, did sit in a bunch of CUV’s at the Seattle Auto Show. Defintely liked the feel of the seats/interior over it’s competitors, except the CX-9.

I’m not a crossover fan, though I see their utility. Wife had accidents in some smaller sedan style cars in high school, and so she prefer’s sitting up high. Hard for me to sell her on a wagon :(

She will not buy a Kia, because the acronym reminds her of “KILLED IN ACTION.” I kid you not. Lord knows I’ve tried convincing her otherwise.

PS - My wife is awesome. Stubborn, but awesome.

MY wife wanted a CX-5, I wanted a Forrester. We got a CX-5. Just have to deal.

Yeah, and I’m pretty much ok with that. I’m trying to see how we can turn over both our cars and I can transition from my Mazda 5 to a Mazda 6 :D

Do you have room in your budget for a second vehicle/fun vehicle?

Give it a test drive, see how you feel about it. Sometimes compromises have to be made, might as well go with the best one, right?

I hate how the Forresters drive. Hate hate hate.

Also, they blend the F in around the PNW. Subaru OUT.

Honest question here. Do you drive your wife’s car? I rarely do, so I don’t have much of an opinion what my wife drives, unless she wanted to buy something stupid expensive or unreliable (she hasn’t).

When we were 7 passenger CUV shopping I wanted a Flex, and my wife didn’t want anything to do with a Flex....

I now drive a 2014 Pathfinder SL tech

Definitely need to give it a test drive, you’re right. That can make or break living with any vehicle every day.

I think I’m still a few years away from a “fun vehicle”. Long story short, I purchased a low-ish mile E39 540i M-Sport a few months after my now wife and I started dating. Really fun car to drive, even my wife enjoyed it! However, it was a lemon. Cost me a ton of money, constant reliability issues, so I sold it less than two years after owning it. My dear wife still gives me a hard time for that purchase. Need some distance from the BMW before I head down the fun path again.

I think my longer-term goal is to get a used ‘16 Volvo V90 in a couple years.

Valid point, which I considered. As long as it’s safe, reliable, and functional, I guess it’s ok, yeah?

Exactly. I happen to really like my wife’s car (CX-5), but if I didn’t ... BFD. To directly answer your question about how you should feel, I’d probably exactly the same way I felt when my dad called me yesterday to tell me that he leased a new Traverse. Which is to say, I found it profoundly boring.

It’s true. Everyone thinks they need AWD around here (as does my gal). Nothing wrong with AWD itself.

Did you have a ton of the black ice this morning? Friggin slippery mcslippersons!

I’ve got an ‘06 Sierra crew cab 2WD base model, that I practically stole brand new. I had a ‘94 Roadmaster wagon for a while as my fun car, but I sold that a couple weeks ago and am now trying to figure out what next for my fun vehicle.

Once my kid was born my wife got on the mindset that she needed AWD in case she had to brave one of those ever so rare Seattle snow storms where people abandon their cars on 405 and eat fellow Metro bus riders.

It was little icy coming off the hill I live up but once I got into Kirkland I was flying.

Tell her you’re gonna go out to buy it, then when you get there, save yourself a $2000 and come home with this instead:

A friend of mine’s wife is trying to pull that on him as well. He’s happy with the Passat they already have.

And over the years they’ve had it, they got stuck exactly zero times and had zero instances where they needed a bigger car.

So they still have the Passat.

That exact Santa Fe? Then you should feel like you are being ripped off. That’s a $20k car tops. I wouldn’t pay more than $17k with the rental history. I don’t understand how Enterprise gets away with Carmax prices for used rentals, but that has to be one of the worst used-car deals I’ve seen in a long time.

One of techs bought a brand new one late last year.

At 4k miles, it needed a new intake.

Despite that, I’d still take one over a comparable gm or VAG product.

Not sure if that’s helpful or not.

Gotcha. I’d still see if I could find one for less. As for the Santa Fe, I had the previous generation. I liked it a lot because it was stupidly reliable, hauled my kids in comfort, helped move many bulky things, and had a lot of nice features for the price. It also had a manual which made it borderline fun. The current gen did away with the manual so I haven’t paid much attention to it, but it still seems to still be a solid value. There are worse choices in the blandmobile segment. If your wife is the primary driver of it, just let her have it as long as you can pick out something better suited to you.
