Kinja'd!!!

I’m thinking about looking into them as a beater/practical vehicle. I know they have a manual available and are quite affordable. Anyone know of any issues with them or anything like that?

The gas tanks frequently leak.

That’s about all I know.

Pretty sure that’s a second generation wagovan with a lift kit.

My aunt loved hers. She lived in Estes Park and used it as a family hauler. Never let her down to my knowledge.

I’ve spent a few thousand miles behind the wheel of one. The seats were kind of meh. I think there’s a common issue with the rear driveshafts needing to be replaced before you’d expect them to. I think my parents had to replace it twice in the seven years they had theirs. The engine is basically a bored out Accord unit so aside from the common Honda transmission issues you shouldn’t expect much trouble under the hood.

Also the dash clocks like to short out and stop working.

My cousin drives the ones she was taken home from the hospital in when she was born. Manual with 160,000 miles on it’s original clutch. Has only had a grand and a half in suspension work about 20,000 miles ago.

I’d say pretty reliable. May have to replace the radio, though, since the displays sometimes go out.

had 2, built both from wrecks, had many adventures, is a great car, just not cool. 99 and up had considerably more power, same engine, shorter fuse. When you get wierd rattles, it’s the swaybar links, go there first. manual way better than auto. on snow in 4wheel the rears are slightly over-driven, so hangs out around corners and does donuts. (don’t try to drift an automatic, the coolness is not predictable and you’ll bounce it off a curb. Do not EVER remove the rear plastic flares.

I metal flaked mine. for fun.

But the 1st gen CR-V used the B20 and the 90s Accords used the F and H series I4s. Maybe you mean to say they used a bored out Civic engine? Also, if he’s looking at manuals he shouldn’t have to worry about transmission issues, except maybe in my experience, bearings going bad.

Third generation. There were two generations of wagovan. But yeah, the RT4WD wagovan basically became the CR-V, while the FWD version became the Odyssey.

It’s a bored out something.

We have a 2nd gen CR-V and we’ve been quite happy with it. It’s an auto because it’s the wife’s car, but no issues with it so far. To be fair, the 2nd gen uses a K series rather than a B series, but as far as I’m aware the RT4WD is essentially the same fluid coupling system in the first two generations. 3rd gen is when they moved to electronically controlled coupling, and when it started failing the icy hill start test.

I like the looks of the 1st and 2nd gens as well. They still have that soft-roading sort of look. 3rd gen and onward just have that generic crossover blob look.

Yeah it’s the bored out B series. More torque and midrange power than the B16/B18, but less rev-happy and top end. That’s why you can pick them up on the used market for so much cheaper.

Looks good. I’d definitely get one with a manual. I don’t trust Honda automatics.

I like the 2nd gens too, but the 1st gen is more in my price range. I think Honda had mostly sorted their automatic transmission issues when the 2nd gen came out, so i’d trust a 2nd gen with one over a 1st gen. Agreed on the looks of the first two over the newer ones...I have a coworker with a 3rd gen and it just looks dull.

b series engine, and is essentially the same design and components as the 6th gen civic (96-00). very easy to maintain and very reliable

Plus, with the full size spare on the outside, you have a nice empty space under the floor of the hatch. I normally use that space to keep my tools when we go on road trips. Also, the 1st and 2nd gens (not sure about later ones) have a foldout picnic table under the floor of the hatch.

If you do get one, you might want to look for a 99-01, because they got the B20Z instead of the B20B, which had about 20 more HP. Still not quick, but better, and a manual should help.

Here’s ours.

I’m partial to the white myself, but the burgundy is one of the better color choices for the 2nd gen. Can’t tell from my pic but it actually has some flake in the paint so it looks pretty good cleaned up.

I’ve only seen one maybe two other 2nd gens with the plastic side molding ours has, so it’s either a very rare option or something aftermarket. I like it though, keeps the doors from getting dinged up. Gives it sort of an Isuzu Vehicross vibe.

Yeah, it’s a cool option. My first color choice would never Nighthawk Black Pearl, simply because my 5th gen Prelude is the same color, but it looks pretty good in most colors.
