What are the oppopinions?

2006 vw Jetta tdi fully loaded. This is the 1.9 tdi not the ones in the dieselgate issues. I am looking to future proof my commuting needs. Anyone own one? Covet one? Work on one? Love y’all!

(Disclaimer: I have posted a lot on oppo for prospective buying advice. Two years ago I purchased a 2002 bmw 540i 6/speed that has proven to be unreliable for daily commuting needs two years ago. I need to make a change but seriously have a hard on for that kind of comfort and performance.)

I once owned a VW (albeit a North American market Jetta). I will never buy a VW again. Least reliable car I’ve ever known.

Don’t know squat about the TDI, but my SIL has had her 2005 Jetta 5-banger manual for 8 years. Zero problems other than an ignition and one battery of that span. All electronics work. Easy to drive, comfortable. I’ve driven it many times and it feels well built and smooth. I know it’s just one anecdote but it’s all I have.

Our neighbors had one with the US spec 5 cyl gas motor. Ok other than the fake leather seats cracked quickly - they turned it in for a new Tiguan.

Its a VW. Your chance of getting a good one are not very good.

North Americans will tell you to run for your live. Since I guess it’s not, I’d say go for a test drive. The 1.9 TDI will last forever and got plenty of power.

Mileage? And front end components replaced?

My parents used to have a Beetle with the 1.9 tdi and it had lots of little things go wrong. The only major thing that I remember was that it broke the an engine mount and that damaged the block. It was fixed without a new engine but wasn’t cheap. In the end they worked out that they hadn’t saved any money with the good mileage from the tdi. They actually replaced it with a 1997 540i that was much more reliable

TDI’s of this gen are known for eating cams from what I remember. Not too big of a deal, if that goes out, aftermarket cams can solve the problem relatively easy, and give the engine a performance boost.

Also to note, as having a MKIV TDI in the family for over 10 years now, I can say theyre pretty good, just a bit pricy on the upkeep, unless you DIY. Fuel economy is worth it though.

For a commuter car ?

I mean, OK, I get not buying the Jetta - I ditched a Golf TDI because it was getting to be too much of a moneypit - but buying a full-size pickup instead?

Assuming we’re talking about US-spec despite the license plate in the photo...

The 8 valve PD engines like to eat camshafts if they’ve ever been exposed to 5W30. Stick with 5W40.

Turbo actuators are problematic.

Other than that, the engines are decent AFAIK as long as you keep on top of maintenance.

Beyond that... VW dual mass flywheels are always problematic. On the DSGs, they’re especially problematic, especially on early DSGs like that. Good news is, you can update those parts AFAIK.

Door harnesses are a common failure on Mk5s.

I can’t think of anything else that’s common on those cars, but VWs in general can quickly become moneypits if you don’t have a good mechanic, or are willing to do all the work yourself. Take a look at this map, this is a map of mechanics (some of which are just a guy working out of his home garage) that people on TDIClub have had good luck with (except for the one in red): http://tinyurl.com/tdimap

These aren’t appliances, though, that’s for sure. Less of a moneypit than a 540i, but...

My wife had a 2006 Jetta. Gas version... but no matter for this... Every nut and bolt was carefully crafted by german engineer who hated regular nuts and bolts. This lead to the need and creation of special wrenches. HUGE PAIN in the ASS when you have to go and do wrenching on your car. You need a whole new set of tools

VW can suck a bag o dicks

I can tell you anything you need to know about this car/engine. Have owned several of these and still own one today.

The BRM is a great engine. It just is a bit hard on the camshaft and every 200k miles may need replacing. It isn’t hard to do. Other issues are the EGR cooler can sometimes leak. If you delete it you’ll never have any problems.

With a malone stage 2 tune you get a 50% increase in power and end up with 150hp and almost 300ft/lbs of torque without anything but a reflash. I have this done to mine and makes it pretty damn fun for my daily driver.

Any other questions just ask! Mine has 270k miles on it and still going strong. Doesn’t burn any oil and get about 600miles to a tank in the city not babying it...
