higher math for me was hit or miss, and a lot of how I “got” it depended on the instructor. my first trip through Differential Equations (Diff. Eq., which we not-so-affectionately called “Diff-e-screw”) was a shit-show my first time through. but when the average exam score for the class is 48/100, it might not be the students. the second time I took it with a different instructor I got an A-. I did OK in Calc 1, just barely squeezed by Calc 2, but for some reason did pretty well in Advanced Engineering Math.
Probability & Statistics, however, was right up my alley. And the best part of it is it clearly showed me how gambling is a complete waste of money.

I usually did fine in math, it was physics where I really struggled. I passed physics 1 on my second try with a D, and physics 2 with a C my first attempt. Physics 2 at tech deals with magnets and electricity and things like that, there used to be a saying: E Mag, Re Mag, Three Mag, Management. Meaning after you failed it a third time you pretty much couldn’t be an engineer and had to switch to management.

That may have been true for us, too. I think I was taking Soils that same semester (from a guy I couldn’t understand who also wrote the book). I realized that my idea of a career working on awesome bridges or other big, cool structures as a civil engineer was probably a pipe dream and called it. I do wonder sometimes if I’d started off in mechanical, or switched early, that I might have had the motivation to finish.

I almost failed out of school when I started, so that was kind of my motivation to stick with it and get my degree. I had thought about transferring but I really wanted that ChemE degree. I just wish I had worked harder my freshman year.

Yeah, I’m very fortunate. She’s smart and fun and hot, likes beer and football, gave me three great kids, is supportive of my car habit, and makes more than me (until this year -ha!). Not sure what I did to deserve her!
