Kinja'd!!!

...the little MGF is done! Full polybushes, a stainless exhaust, new o2 sensor and a balljoint :)

Just needs the suspension pumping up as it’s riding on the bump-stops at the front (no wonder the ride was harsh...), tracking and tyres then it’s good for the trek to the ‘ring in March :)

These things are so damn cheap they’re pretty tempting. What puts me off is my girlfriends parents had a late MG TF and the build quality was appalling, even though they only put 15k miles on it in a decade. Was a good looking car though.

I mean several people have successfully put honda motors in them...

I wonder if the build quality dropped when Nanjing started producing them. Our one seems pretty well buttoned up, especially for 150k miles. Same with my dad’s ‘02.

I reckon a lot of the ones that are still about nowadays have had the headgasket done which is the only real weakness on them. I say go for it ;)

Oh, and parts are dirt cheap too ;)

This one was from right at the end of Rover pre chinese takeover so thatll have a lot to do with it. The insurance is quite reasonable so maybe one day I’ll get one to play with. MX5s without rust are just getting so damn expensive. Same with e36 coupes.

This is a very good point.

Hah yeah, I suppose mine was built when all the engineers were optimistic about their new sports car :)

Yeah all of the early 90s cars are getting to the point where quite a few have been scrapped and the rest are getting a little ropey :S

straight 6 in your little hatch would do nicely though ;) keep the unpainted panels ;)

Yeah my primary plan is to turn the e36 into a good drifter. Im currently planning to get some blocks made up to lock the diff (the safer replacement for a welded diff since LSDs are crazy expensive). Need to get the diff open and take some measurements, or look harder for some off the shelf parts.

Was it a bastard to get all the old bushes out? I’m looking to fit an anti-lift kit to the GTI as the console bushes are getting a bit ropey.

I don’t know if your friend with the MX5 knows that there is an MX5 breakfast meet in Cowfold on the last Sunday of the month. All cars are welcome though, I turn up in my golf and friends in an S500, Z4 etc.

If the timing was different I’d have sold you my mx5 for £500, it would have needed work and I thought it was cap when I sold it but it’s still going a year and a half later, I sold it for 500 buy probably could have got 900 in hindsight.

What was wrong with it? £500 is a screaming deal for one that isnt about to rust in half, or hasn’t been drifted directly into a wall.

It was the first job for our new eBay press which made things much easier! I have done bushes before with a vice which is still doable, and also with just a big bolt, a beefy washer and a big socket.

If you’ve got a decent array of big sockets (so you can press the bush through into them) then it shouldn’t be too tricky :)

We didn’t know about that! Cowfold’s not far away :) I’ll mention it to him :)

Interesting. How do the blocks lock the diff? Haven’t heard of that before...

I suppose if you manage to snag a deal on an LSD later you can always swap out your locked one no harm done :)

They replace the spider gears and seem to be reversible. Theyre surprisingly not that common, I first saw them recently on Hot Rod Garage.

It had been driven into 4 times in a year not massive dents though and had crap sill repair, ideally needed need bushes all round and roof had a hole in it. I had just had enough of it.

Ah I do remember you saying about it being cursed after all the hits haha. I hate dealing with rotten sills. Did an entire sill replacement once and it was a PITA.

To be fair it’s never let the new owner down and it’s not been hit, I just had a bad time with it.

Ah they have all kinds of weird and wonderful things over in the States...

Will be interesting to hear what they’re like if/when you get round to fitting them :)

Yeah, from what I can tell they were made for drag racers wanting both wheels to hook up, not just one wheel burnouts. Whether I actually get the time to make and fit them is a whole other deal :D
