Kinja'd!!!

Contemplating several ideas for a “weekend” vehicle / track toy. Been driving around in a 981 Boxster for about a week now and I think its a fantastic platform. I’ve been contemplating.

Not sure what I want to spend yet, lots and lots of variables. I love my AMG but I don’t drive it. Might keep it. Might sell it and spend big money on a toy, who knows.

Anyways my contemplation(s) of now are one of these 3 vehicles. Sadly, the closest auto x day to me is about a 2 hr drive and the closest track to me is about a 5 hour drive, so whatever this toy is, its not likely to see a bunch of track time. The roads out here are good, so I’m not overly concerned about ride quality, but I would like something thats not going to make me stop by the chiropractor every time I drive it.

Opition 1:

Kinja'd!!!

997 Turbo. 3 pedal of course. By far the fastest option.

Option 2:

Kinja'd!!!

981 GTS. 3 Pedal again. likely the best suited mixed use car of the 3

Option 3:

Kinja'd!!!

981 GT4. My favorite of the 3, Ive already seen GT4 prices inflate. Looks great, sounds great, performs great...

Need opinions and why, or other options...

Why not a older Cayman R? You get the GREEN, iirc its a manual, and most of the depreciation is done. Maybe they are already appreciating

If you can’t get to an autox or racetrack, all the cars you listed are going to be pretty similar on the street (at 6-7/10ths you don’t really get to see what the cars can really do). Acceleration and horsepower are easier to access on the street for short bursts than sublime handling, so I’d recommend the turbo (I like the others better for motorsports).

The turbo should also be more comfortable to drive long distances or to cruise around in and should have more room.

Baseless opinion:

I’d go the GT3. Since it’ll be on the street, the most I’d guess you’d push is 7-8/10. The GT4 and 911 would be far into extralegal speeds before they got “fun”

Also the difference in price for an R and a GTS is about 3 to 5 grand...

Why did you post three pictures of a VW beetle?

Without being on a track, you’ll never see the limits of any of them. The turbo should be the most comfortable, the GT4 will hold its value the best but if I’m honest the GTS is what I would take home of the 3. Not too much power to never be able to do more than feather the throttle and its not a harsh track day special.

From what I’ve read, the GT4 has pretty decent ride quality. But I’d still probably go 981 GTS if you aren’t going to see a lot of track time. It’s an incredible car, and you won’t have to pay the markup.

Also, how about a 997 GTS?

If you can get a 981 in Miami Blue do it. I saw this Turbo in Miami blue last night and it is beautiful.

The Cayman GTS is the most realistic option.

Option4: older boxter S with renegade hybrids LSx swap. fab american cheap maintenance, cheaper entry cost, plus great power to weight and having a badass track toy outpacing much more expensive 911s is a good thing

981 GTS on track was SUBLIME. THough I didn’t get a chance to drive a GT4 sadly. If the GT4 is out of reach, for a pure drive the GTS Cayman is unbelievable.

Sounds like you want a car that is fun even when not at the limit. Porsches are great, but F430 got the shout.

Out of the 3, the GTS is probably the value sweet spot for a car that will just be used without too much worry.

Not a fan of the 430. I drove several (coupe, convertible, scud) and the TCU for the dual clutch is not that great IMO. Maybe a manual but they keep commanding such prices for the 3 pedals. I’d pick up another 360 before the 430. Plus I think the 430 sounds like shit.
