Kinja'd!!!

I am looking at cars to buy/lease and I am having a hard time finding anything interesting and good looking. So far, I have figured out that I would like to have something fun to drive with a bit of power, but on the other hand sensibility kicks in as well...

Example... Here is an Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart that has been imported from the US:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Mileage claimed to be only 27.000 (43.000 KM) or so. Plenty of power, a reportedly very nice transmission and it looks clean. I have a soft spot for Mitsubishi since my parents owned almost exclusively Mitsu’s while I was growing up and they never seemed to have a problem. Also, the design still looks fresh to me personally with the exception of the rear-end perhaps. But... It’s €10.000 for a 7 year old car, I have no real info about reliability and it’s a bit bare in terms of options. No Recaro seats, no Rockford Fosgate audio system, no nav system etc. There is also a 2011 Sportsback version floating around with more creature comforts, but it has more than double the miles on it and the rear-end of the Sportsback looks even worse IMO.

Then, the sensible part of my brain guided my mouse to this:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Kia Cee’d, only 3 years old, not too bad on the mileage at 48.000 miles (76.100 KM). Loads of equipment, enough power to satisfy normal people and that 7-year warranty that still has about 3-years or 52.000 miles left. I drove a rental Cee’d for a while and it was quite decent though not spectacular.

Both will come out to similar prices per month to lease, which has my preference at the moment. Emotion is leaning towards Lancer, sensibility is leaning towards Kia... Why does it have to be so hard... #firstworldproblems indeed.

If you want to have some fun looking at other options to throw in to the mix, this would be the site to look at:

No seat leon nearby? Theyre nice looking cars and available with some pretty sensible engines. 10k euros should get you one from the current body style.

Fun to drive with a bit of power? That Juke all over it, that’s the 1.6L turbo at least.

Current body style starts around 13k on the used car sites here, it’s not a very popular brand so less of them around.

Looks like you have to keep looking for the Altimate solution to your problem. Maybe you can get some Zs and come up with something in the morning.

I was about to post the Juke too. They really are great handling little things, fun to drive with the 6MT and 1.6T power is good. But yeah the looks are polarizing. Personally I love it, but if you don’t it would be hard to live with every day.

Anything particular? I have no experience with either buying a car or leasing one since this would be my first car. Leasing here is really, really common and outright buying the cars would give the same headaches if it is about maintaining the car and such.

Yep, it’s a bit of a shame, I really like the looks of it, especially the Cupra version of course. But that one is way out of budget.

No idea what your requirements are other than you are looking around 10,000 and somewhat low in the milage. So I looked for things I liked.

I was looking at this one earlier:

Yup, for tall cross over it handles better then it should. The 6spd is OK, it’s really notchy and gears are stupid short. It’s not a good manual.

Yeah, I didn’t really outline any demands, did I? I’m basically shopping very inefficiently, just looking at what’s out there and appeals to me. And only after that filtering out if it has any use to me. Cars like those BMW 7 series and Audi A8 are kind of pointless for me, as cool as they are. I won’t use the space, I won’t cruise on long highway stretches and live in a city so parking might be a PITA.

Besides that, the ones that have no mileage listed are usually well above 200k kilometer, so say at least 120k miles. The Audi A6 wagon is nearing 200k miles for example (it shows the odometer in one of the pictures, 311k kilometer). Does not necessarily have to be bad, but I want to worry as little as possible about car trouble taking up precious free time.

Yeah theyre smart little things. Trying to think of other hatchbacks that are a bit more common but interesting. The Golf is a bit pricey, the Octavia is a bit dull unless you go for a VRS. The most recent focus is a bit ugly in my opinion, although the facelift helped it a little. To be honest the more I consider it the Ceed seems like a fine choice.

I don’t remember it being too short but I only drove it around town and probably never got above 5th (plus when it’s not your car you tend not to drive economically). I do hate 6 speeds that don’t have tall upper gears. My Forester’s 6th keeps it below 3k to somewhere past 70 MPH (112 km/h). Some others out there (apparently the current Fit is one of the worst offenders but I haven’t driven one) take what was the ratio for 5th and make that 6.

I’ve been browsing those as well, the looks just don’t appeal to me with the models of the last few years. 2015 and after are better but too pricey here for even the base models.

Dutchy here as well but living in Estonia. Did not see the post but also can’t really plan far ahead due to work on a roster basis.

Might still have a look then. Tons of power to play with apparently, but I’ll gladly trade power for a better balance towards reliability. I just want to worry as little as possible about my car breaking down or having some major issues.

In town 5th is my highest gear, but my old 5spd was far superior to my current 6spd. It had way better ratios.

Yeah but no but yeah but.... There probably a good reason why the mileage isn’t listed and not shot of the interior shows the odometer either. How reliable are these after 120+k miles?

I feel like a 6+ speed is very hard to get right. In my Santa Fe, I was always wishing for a 6th gear, but once I bought a 6-speed, it seems like the spacing is kind of wonky. Like I said, I love having the tall 6th, but 3-4-5 seem like they could be spaced better - I skip over 4th altogether about half the time. The 6MT that VW pairs with the 2.0T is pretty lovely. I’ve driven a GTI, GLI, and CC with it and just loved it. The best gear selectors I’ve ever used still come from Honda, but I’ve never driven one of their 6-speeds.

I’m not sure about reliability, I know I’ve seen some for sale with near 200k on the clock. I’m sure there’s a reason that mileage isn’t listed and there are no interior shots. I wasn’t seriously suggesting you should get one.

Ive had the Cee’d as a rental for a week while on a business trip in Germany. I was positively surprised by interior. Good quality bits and pieces, modern and abstract. Very nice.

However, I am a sporty driver, I think mine had the Eco 1.6 engine and....I would not own that car with that engine. I experienced the engine to be very lazy and, in my opinion, underpowered. For city driving, Im sure it’s good enough, but personally, I’d get something a bit sportier.

In my Juke 1-2 is really short, 3-4 is pulls like a freight train and is great on twisty roads. 4-5 is great for in town, and 6th is highway only. Doing 120kph in 6th I’m turning 3250rpm.

I’m all for leasing, but not with used cars. The appeal of leasing is having a new car with no headaches where you’re only on the hook for gas, tires, and insurance. On a preowned car, that goes out the window. I would say lease a nice Polo or Golf that has the features you want, but not a top of the line with excess stuff. Just pay your fees down so that you don’t pay money factor (interest for leases) and you’re set.

I own a Ralliart. It’s a great car and far under estimated by enthusiasts. It’s quick, handles exceptionally well, and has 500hp+ potential with mods. Most Evo parts bolt right on (the only exceptions are suspension - Evo has different geometry, and exhaust - the different rear diff gets in the way).

I considered moving to the UK and couldn’t believe how cheap they were. Its an insane performance per dollar since it’s not just a straight line car. That said, the interior sucks, the paint is prone to road chips, and service is expensive (the trans fluid needs to be flushed ever 30k miles and that takes about $300 in fluid each time).

The RF system in that car isn’t that good and for normal daily driving, you won’t miss the recaros. There are double din kits you can buy to put a nice looking stereo in with screen but the standard audio system has decent voice controls.

The transmission is pretty great. It can handle 300 ftlb before needing a cooler or any clutch pack work. It IS a DCT though. So you won’t want to leave it in auto mode. It’s at its best when you are changing the gears.

Trunk space is pretty good and with the rear seats down, I have no problem getting snowboard and ski equipment in the back.

As you can tell, I’m pretty attached to mine. It has the spirit that people forget to look for in a car.
