10. My first car, a 1994 BMW 525i touring. It blew up dramatically on the way home from buying it, spewing black, grey, and white smoke everywhere. It sat in the driveway for a long time, before I sold it as a parts car.
9. 1990 Dodge Ram B250 passenger van that I bought to move with. Since I only moved a block, it was useful for that. Any farther and it would start overheating, since I’m pretty sure the water pump was broken. I loved it for some reason, and the interior was amazing. I believe it’s now a work van, but who knows.
8. 1986 BMW 325. It was always broken, it was slow, the ignition was hanging from the steering column and it had to be started with a screwdriver (It wasn’t stolen, seriously), the muffler falling off was the best thing that ever happened to it. Here it is in it’s natural habitat, broken. Also it’s dead now.
7. 1993 BMW 740i. This thing was $600, had really blown front shocks, a power steering system that wouldn’t hold fluid, and oh man did it sound good. It also had no muffler. The only reason it’s not higher is because the pump seized after a month and took out the serpentine so we couldn’t drive it anymore. A friend bought it, fixed everything, and now it’s his winter car.
6. 1982 BMW 320i. I loved this car, and if I miss it. I sold it for good reason, but I still want it back, even though it was pretty terrible to drive, and very rusty. Such a cool little car though. Probably dead now, but I dunno.
5. 1981 BMW 633CSi. This is objectively the best old BMW I’ve had. Under 200k kms, ran wonderfully, shifted wonderfully, rode wonderfully. It just needed better brakes, also the paint was mostly gone. Also I hate blue leather. Still, it was a hell of a lot of car for $1000.
4. 1983 BMW 533i with an M30B35 out of an E34. This is the fastest car I’ve ever had, and the car with the most overpowered brakes. It had E32 740i brakes, and they were terrifyingly effective. Best $500 car ever, and I’ve regretted selling it pretty much since the day it was sold.
3. 1969 Volvo 144S. This was my real “first car”. This is what I learned to do basic stuff on, and probably hurt it more than helped it in the process, but it kept going for a while, and I became more attached to it than any car other than number 1 on this list. I miss it, and I’d buy it back if I could.
2. 2006 Subaru Legacy wagon. My current car, inherited from my grandpa. I love it, it does everything I need a practical car to do, and looks good too. I get more attached to it the longer I have it, and every road trip we do makes it feel more like my car. Eventually it will supersede number 1, but for now it’s a close second.
1. 1997 Chevy Blazer. Yup, definitely not the best vehicle here objectively, but I love this thing too much for it to be anywhere else. I bought it for $600, daily drove it for a while, drove it towards Montreal fully expecting to be repairing at least a couple things, or maybe not making it at all. But nope, it did 10,000kms without skipping a beat, and was my daily when I got back for about 2 years. Always started, always got me home, whatever the weather and whatever state of disrepair it was in at the moment. I’ve driven it the most out of all those other cars, and whenever one of them was broken, it was my fallback that always started first try even after sitting for months. It’s reliable, versatile, full of character, and I kind of wish I hadn’t sold it. Though I know it’s better that it’s being driven instead of sitting behind my house.

Great list. It’s hilarious how expensive all these cars would be if you tried to buy them today in decent condition...

The inflated value of old BMWs is rather annoying. If I’d known I wold never see a $500 running/driving E28 again, I doubt I would’ve sold that 533.

Canada bucks actually, so at the time maybe $800 US? I sold that for $1500, and they’re never that cheap anymore, even in that condition. I’m good at selling cars at the wrong time...

The US does seem to have some of the best cars prices in the world, across the range from new to beaters. You can get some really cheap cars in Europe, but the same model is more there.
