Yeah, that is true, but I bet nowhere near the numbers they do across the pond.

This is actually a pretty interesting read and they point out emission restrictions.
And then there’s another challenge for diesels—stricter U.S. emission regulations. The 50-state light-duty vehicle limit for emissions of nitrogen oxides is 0.07 grams per mile. In Western Europe, the limit is 0.29.
Holy shit that is wild. The difference in amount of pollutants allowed per mile. But honestly I would much rather have a diesel than a Hybrid or electric until our power grid is off fossil fuels. Otherwise they are just demanding more electricity that is in turn still burning more fossil fuels.

Diesels are getting looked at by many Euro governments for more strict emissions.
Some diesels can be problematic for short runs (which probably won’t be an issue in the U.S. where commutes are generally much longer) and doing regen cycles.
I’ve a petrol 1.4TSi ACT 148bhp in a car that is essentially a VW Passat (in Europe the Skoda Superb gets the same engines as the VW Passat also, where in the U.K. the Passat is a diesel only car) and get 44-47 mpg (37-39 mpg US) around town. It’s no slouch either.

Yeah, I have been reading dieselgate has been effecting sales over there too. You would be astounded at the amount of trucks we get in our shop that we have to force regen because these guys buy them as farmtrucks so they never see the highway to get the regen ran.

Dieselgate didn’t effect us much in that the U.K. government said if you want to keep your car the way it is, fine, you don’t have to have the car ‘fixed’ if you don’t want to, nor will you be penalised for it.
European governments are removing incentives or putting requirements on diesel cars in certain cities. I think France was talking about banning them in big cities altogether by 2020.
Governments were of the opinion that diesels were cleaner and reduced the tax on them or added incentives to buy one over the petrol alternative but over the years diesel went from being cheaper than petrol to more than petrol. Some towns and cites had a higher congestion charge for bringing in a diesel, some made it a fine able offence to sit in stationary traffic with your diesel engine running.
Petrols are doing just as well for mpg these days.
