Avanti’s styling always looked a little off to me. The story is that Lowey and a couple of others were locked up in a house in Palm Springs without any outside contact during the design phase. I’m sure plenty of Martoonies were gulped down during that time. For 1962 it was a standout design for certain.
Lowey’s sketches actually help make more sense of the design (for me at least). I can even see where Chryco may have cribbed a few ideas for the 71 B bodies.

I actually prefer the ‘80s version with the square headlights and blacked out trim. It was a tasteful update that made a 20 year old design look totally contemporary.
