Kinja'd!!!

That was exceptional.

I made it very clear that I wasn’t driving it home and that this was just a research visit, but he encouraged me to drive anyway. I’ll be driving other options, but I suspect I’ll be back.

It was exceptionally hard to turn down his offer of an extended test drive home tonight. That’s probably a sign.

New FoST, FiST, and AWD Taurus with something turbo-y, and used anything that catches my eye.

Sounds like you’re gonna end up with the WRX.

No, but I did drive one for a week as a rental a year ago. It was fun car, but rough as hell over broken pavement and not all that tolerable as a DD. It was completely outclassed by the road manners of the WRX as a DD.

Most people say the opposite, but ive only driven the wrx so I cant personally disagree.

The guy directed me on a rutted and bumpy section of road through an industrial park, which is pretty representative of how shitty a lot of the roads are around here. It was amazingly composed. That’s the sort of daily driver I want. The GTI was just too harsh for me.

I’m open to options. What would you suggest?

Depends on how much you’re looking to spend. I would say a BMW, but I am not really a fan of the electric steering they use.

Idk, just seems like every review ive seen says the GTI has always had far superior ride quality, that being one of its biggest advantages since its a little slower than the wrx.

Fair enough, I can’t really think of a good alternative.

The other major selling point is AWD. I drive a fwd hatch with good snows, and I do reasonably well in the winter. But it’s nothing compared to my wife’s outback with snows which will go seemingly anywhere.

Oh yeah if you get snow, get the WRX. I LOVE having a good car for snow. Makes winter so much more bearable

As a current WRX owner and past VW owner, lolwat? The GTI’s road manners should be faaar superior to the Subie. You must have gotten a thoroughly trashed example as a rental. The WRX is way better than older models but the composure/refinement are the biggest thing I miss from the Vdub.

That said, buy the WRX, it’s fun as hell and fantastic in the snow.

It could also be up to personal preference in the feel I’m looking for in a performance car.

Still wish I’d gotten this over my GTI because I was being “mature”.....

There were many objective reasons (supplier plus price on GTI with great residuals for lease back in July ‘15 vs MSRP for WRX less MPG, more for equivalent equipment, nicer GTI interior), but that’s not worth a damn if every day I go back and wish I’d gotten the damn WRX.
