Solid color accuracy for photo editing.

Zero [insert your favorite vulgar descriptor here] gaming.

HDMI (DisplayPort would be nice) input.

NVIDIA Quadro FX 580 is my perfectly adequate display card, and I’m not buying any hardware.

23-24”

Sub-$200, preferrably.

Stretch your budget by $20 and you can get this Dell Ultrasharp U2412m. No HDMI but it does have DisplayPort (and DVI so you could use a $2 adapter to go to HDMI). We have one or two of these and a TON of Ultrasharps at work. I don’t know about this one but most have come with a color calibration test certification sheet. Amazing color and viewing angles for the price. Not great for gaming but you said zero gaming. This one is 1920x1200 16:10 which is better for photo editing than the popular 16:9 TV aspect ratio monitors.

Kinja'd!!!

Thank you for this recommendation. Dell is frequently mentioned in top monitor reviews, and the 16:10 aspect ratio is a huge plus. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

And my Quadro graphics card is DisplayPort out, so no adaptor necessary.

Check closely what it comes with too... Dell usually includes cables with the Ultrasharp line (unlike some of their lower end models and competitors) and it might be DP in the box. I love the Ultrasharps - they keep the case and refresh rates boring so they can put $ towards good color and viewing angles. And you can always find them on sale. This is a 2012 model which is why it is cheaper, but it’s still going to be a great looking picture.

Oh and when you can afford it some day, I’m using a Dell P2715Q 4K 27" monitor and it is amazing. Also came with a color calibration sheet. Running over DisplayPort to a Quadro W7100. We were using a lot of HP Z-series 1440p 27" monitors before that which were very good, but started failing after about 3 years. So we switched back to Dell.

Acer makes some really nice IPS 24-27" models, only thing is you may not have the horsepower to run them, they are typically 2560x1440

More perfect. And the Quadro card is DP out.

I was going to suggest 21:9, as it’s awesome for productivity (and video editing), but you’re right that 16:10 is probably better for photos.

16:10 would be preferable to 16:9 in my opinion. I’m not a professional, but a very serious amateur. Price is right, features are right, seems like an ideal recommendation, all things considered.

Certainly, and once you go IPS, you’ll be ruined for 90% of TN panels.

I’d avoid lenovo displays, I find they tend to run colors a bit cool.

If they haven’t yet recommended, go mid 200s for an ultra wide. 21:9 I think it is. The desktop space is very usable especially if you have quite a bit of editing tools and tabs up.

I’m going to go with the Dell from the first reply. Price is right and it has native DisplayPort in, and my Quadro video card has DP out. Also, at 16:10, it’s slightly taller in aspect.

Different panel technologies. TN is the ‘classic’ LCD panel, while IPS is generally a lot clearer, with better viewing angles. Also a somewhat higher response time, but that’s irrelevant if you’re not a hardcore gamer.

I don’t game at all. And if I did, it’d be something like Microsoft Flight Simulator, for which this monitor would probably be fine.

I’d go for a Dell 2415 instead of the 2412. The 15 is newer, has HDMI, DisplayPort, and a thinner bezel but either one should be good. I’ve got two 2415s and they are great for everything, including gaming. Also, Dell included the DisplayPort cable with the monitor but not the HDMI.

Also depending where you are located, i have phased out all of our 18-22" Dell and Samsung monitors at work and really would like to get them out of my storage room.

Other than bezel size and HDMI-in, would the display be otherwise the same?

I’ve never used the 2412 but its possible that Dell changed the display since the two are 3 years apart. On Amazon, it says that both have the same resolution but the 2415 has a faster response time and is lighter. It also looks like the 2415 has a different interface to the 12 from the screenshots. Other than that, I’m not really sure.
