What is happening at Elio Motors?

The last few days I have read many articles and posts about wonderful new car companies that are presenting their product to the world, like FF and Lucid Motors. FF, I just read, secured 64 thousand deposits, while pricing is still unclear.

As my mind works in mysterious ways, my thoughts went to Elio. The connection is electricity. I have always loved the funky model Elio has been presenting, but I believe it should have been an EV.

So I looked them up. Website still alive. Price still advertised at 7300 usd. A ticker shows over 64 thousand deposits. FF did this in a day or three. But from their website, I have not been able to find any information concerning actual cars being made, besides one picture where two dudes are doing something to what appears to be a chassis, and there is another chassis in sight. But it does in no way look like a production line. So what is up with Elio these days?

Miss Mercedes posted a piece the other day: http://oppositelock.kinja.com/as-far-as-the-regulatory-model-citation-on-the-feds-sa-1790794417

I’m rooting for FF because if they succeed, that technology will trickle down into more affordable cars. Buts let’s face it, those 64,000 deposits will drop like flies when the pricing is announced. During the introduction they said it would be priced to compete with “flagships from premium brands.” Think BMW 760Li, MB S600, Model X P100D. That means $150k minimum. Realistically, I’m thinking $200k with the auto-parking, LiDAR, etc. installed. Think about it - this has 30% more battery capacity and more tech than a P100D that STARTS at $136k. Even $150k would be a bargain for what you get, but I don’t see 64,000 people lining up for that. Cars that expensive just don’t sell in those numbers no matter what they are. Unless FF is planning a lower power, lower capacity version with most of the sensors as optional upgrades, there is no way they can sell this for anywhere close to $100k and make a profit. Unless they just don’t pay their suppliers (which the suppliers are already complaining about) but then they won’t last very long.

For Elio, it’s just about all over except for the coming indictments. They’re dead in the water. Vaporware.

Elio, which has been announcing that they’d start production “next year” every year since 2013, just announced that they’re gonna start production next year -2018.

To date, they’ve raised tens of millions of dollars and produced only 4 or 5 rolling chassis and a couple of engines.

It’s a scam. I’d put a deposit down on a Dale, before I would an Elio.

The latest word is that they have $101,000 cash on hand and have postponed production for another year.

I would like them to succeed, but besides what Miss Mercedes posted, the desicion to make their own motor has made me write them off for ever producing the thing.
