This is a perfectly normal reaction. Feelings of lust and desire are well known symptoms once one has viewed beautiful open-wheel racing cars, for above all else their purpose is to bring thinking people to their knees with want.  It is simply a function of the tendency of the enthusiast’s brain to reminisce about the the last time F1 was good, when the cars were lithe, sexy and balanced, and made orgasmic noises. This car offers that look at a tantalizingly lower but still painfully unaffordable price, inciting and encouraging these feelings. Making promises it cannot keep. One cannot help but want more. Be warned, it is not real. It will own you. You mustn’t view such things with regularity, as your perception of reality and appreciation of normal, practical, real machines may become unbalanced. Think of the virtue and reliability of that beige Camry, how trustworthy and honorable it is, how well it performs, day in and day out. Does it deserve our love and respect any less for not rupturing our eardrums or pulverizing our bodies with G-force? It is protecting us, keeping us whole. Do not forsake it for flashier alternatives, simply because they showed a little wing, perhaps a glimpse of slick in the back of the paddock.  They are trying to tempt you into ruin with a siren song. You’re better than that. Step back from the Tubes Of You, stay grounded to the ground, and find what’s real.

So... Formula SAE?

If I were going to play with open wheel racecars these days, I’d be tempted by the old (tube frame) Formula Mazda cars. A really good one can be had for around 20k, Sealed 13B, only a couple of different gear sets allowed, pushrod suspension, wings, spec class, 2Gs in high speed corners, folks still play with them in most regions, and you can get a couple of seasons out of a motor.

Wow! Tremendous.

The Pro one (below) looks even more tremendous.

Kinja'd!!!

But I wonder if I can re-body it.

Yes, the first one. The pro Mazda car is awesome, and sexy, and probably an order of magnitude more expensive to buy and operate. The new car is a carbon fiber tub versus the old car being a steel tube frame. The body work would not swap over.

So tube frame it is, then.

Mid 90's was the peak for open-wheel styling.
