Kinja'd!!!

They’re going to look at this on Monday. Blown engine, but for $600 it can’t be worse than the 300zx

Well it’s right by my house, I’ve sourced a rotary for another Oppo before.

Wouldn’t you want something dead simple cheap and reliable for chumpcar? Like a carbed 4.3.

Actually a rotary is fairly reliable for track purposes. They need to be revved out for longevity, so as long as it’s warm before they thrash it and they add oil, it should be fine. On top of that, it’s about 10x more difficult to swap in another engine.

Also, the 4.3 makes a terrible engine on the track. That is an excellent way to throw a rod. The 4.3 is a decent engine, so long as you just leave it where it is happy. It’s not happy above 3500rpm. I drive one nearly every day, it sucks. It won’t die, but it’s a souless, awful sounding engine.

I have wanted to do both chump car and lemons for years now and will eventually get to do so hopefully. Realistically would a team of say 5 guys each putting in a max of $1500 be a decent budget for a car, saftey equipment, modifications, race fees and such?

A rebuilt one sure, but God knows what’s actually wrong with a $100 CL renesis.

Rebuilding a Renesis can be done by an amateur. There are less than 20 parts inside of it. The fact that it is already removed makes it easier. It also sounds like it’s just lost compression, so a rebuild should fix it right up. That would cost less than everything needed to swap an engine.

It has to be a 4.3 with the balance shaft unless he wants to locktite every bolt.

Have you priced out the parts for a rotary rebuild including apex seals? They’re not cheap.

So far, if you’ve bought a car that doesn’t need extensive repairs, you could have a track ready car for about $2000

Where’s your sense of adventure? If you still have fillings, you’re not racing! I suggest the 4.3 in 90% jest. I mean it would be very cheap and moderately reliable, but obviously there would be better choices for a track day.

Like an Iron Duke!

That works, I just figured the 4.3 would be slightly easier to package, but that’s why God invented sawzalls :P

MUCH Cheaper than new wiring, new trans, new ignition system, new mounts, new cooling, a junkyard engine, and all the hundreds of other little things you would need for a swap.

How much wiring do you think a carbed 4.3 requires? You are overthinking this swap.

I believe you and most of Oppo really under think engine swaps.

If you don’t need accessories, inspections, aesthetics or worry about NVH, it’s a simple thing. Been part of a couple.
