Kinja'd!!!

Tomorrow is the Jalopnik event, and my goal is to shave 2 seconds off yesterday’s 29.546 best time. Here’s the track. Can you guys give me some tips and pointers on how to do so?

With the caveat of not having seen or driven this track and karts in person, the racer inside of me is suspicious of the suggested line through 3. If that exit is as tight as it looks, that line might really be loading up the kart on the way out and costing exit speed, the loss of which will be magnified down that straight. That line also leaves a great passing opportunity for the guy behind you.

I would probably try squaring off that corner complex and/or treating it as a double apex situation with the aim of maximizing speed at corner exit, which will pay dividends all the way down that straight. That line would also make any passing attempts by the guy behind you much less likely to succeed in that spot.

Use your stars very carefully, and you can get a little more speed coming out of the corners if you time your leans just right for the blue sparks.

Yes and no, the bike lean is to let you keep the motorcycle upright while still turning. You lower the center of gravity by hanging off and can use your weight to pull the bike into the inside of the turn.

In a go-kart, you lean to transfer the weight onto different parts of the suspension and drivetrain. Leaning forward while braking helps put the weigh on the front to slow you down a bit better. It will also help with turn in since those fronts have very little weight on them. Leaning “into” a turn helps keep some weight on both back tires so you can stay on the power instead of one side suddenly going light and you find yoruself with some oversteer or a one wheel peel.

Can’t one-wheel-peel when there’s no diff - karts have a solid rear axle and both rear wheels turn at the same rate. Ideally you want the inside rear wheel to lift slightly off the ground as you rotate and then load up again smoothly through the exit.

Leaning forward can be useful to get more bite from the fronts if you’re understeering, but the brakes are only on the rear wheels (every turn is a handbrake turn! whee!)

Aside from the simple weight distribution benefit, it also helps plant the inside rear wheel.

Karts are live axles, the inside wheel has the shortest path around the corner. Keeping the weight over the inside rear wheel aids in planting that tire and pulling you through the corner faster.

The weight transfer helps in two ways. First you want the center of mass of the kart to take the shortest path aroundthe track. Second, tires have a finite amount of grip to give. If you set upright and go around a corner, the inside tire will try to lift and the outside tire will plant. Eventually you will surpass the grip constant of the outside tire while under utilizing the inside tire. By shifting weight over the inside tire you will start to minimize the lift on the inside tire giving you more total grip avaliable. This is the same concept as sway bars on a suspension vehicle.

This is why circle track kartsare usually offset chassis.

A tap, typically those karts start slowing down once you lift off the throttle. Plus, theres a lot of room to get out wide and really throw the kart into the turn.

Kinja'd!!! "John Norris (AngryDrifter)" (angrydrifter)
01/06/2017 at 16:47, STARS: 1

1. Get the fastest kart.
2. Start at the front so you don’t have slower karts fouling your lap time.
3. Make sure you are setting yourself up to exit the corners as good as you can. Diving into a corner can make you slow down too much to exit the corner optimally. If there is a straight after the corner you will be slower for the entire straight (as in turn 3 and 6 in your map). If a straight is several seconds long you will be slower ans losing time for several seconds. Sometimes diving into a corner is necessary to pass a slower car. See item #2 above.
4. Turn #1 looks pretty tight. The entry into #1 will greatly impact your time through #1, 2, and 3. A smooth entry not resulting in a lot of oversteer or understeer should help. Same goes for turn #5. A bad entry there probably fouls you all the way down the front straight.

Kinja'd!!! "derf" (derficus)
01/06/2017 at 16:50, STARS: 0

Don’t know about circle track karts, but a normal kart chassis is designed to unload the inside rear wheel as you’re turning in. Ideally you want to three-wheel through mid corner and load the inside tire up again as you exit.

Kinja'd!!! "Censored" (chrisbrown2992)
01/06/2017 at 17:02, STARS: 0

I grew up circle track racing and assumed that the same principles transferred over. Guess not.

For my curiosity, why would you wan’t to lift a wheel? You are purposfully reducing the total grip available. Is it due to axle bind? Most of my racing experience also was on dirt where axle bind is much less of an issue. Dirt however, plays very similar to the “slick” nature of the indoor concrete tracks.

Kinja'd!!! "derf" (derficus)
01/06/2017 at 17:11, STARS: 1

This. You want the inside wheel to lift when you’re turning in.

Short version: because you don’t have a diff, you have two sticky tires that must turn at the same speed. Lifting the inside wheel means it can turn at the faster rate demanded by the longer path the outside wheel is taking without having to fight its own friction with the track surface.

Here’s a link talking about kart chassis setup in more detail:

Ah, I could see how you’d want a different approach for low traction surfaces. Hm.. I tried to reply to Sideways on Dirt up above, but it doesn’t seem to have gone through.

Never lift off the gas just use the brakes to slow for corners. Keeping the rpms up will make you faster out of corners, this is rough on the kart and they may yell at you, but you’ll be faster.
