Kinja'd!!!

The Aviation Herald reports that yesterday (5 January 2017), a Boeing 737 operated by LAM - Mozambique Airlines collided with a remotely piloted aircraft while on approach to Tete, Mozambique. The flight crew heard a loud bang and suspected a bird strike, but landed safely and normally.

I think this is the first confirmed case of a drone colliding with an airliner, but please let me know if it has happened in the past.

or a drone like the drones the cia uses to assasinate high value enemy targets?

Hobby drone most likely. The professional operators are smart enough to stay out of congested airspace like an airport.

Interesting. I wonder if they recovered bits and pieces and that is how they made the determination that it was a drone? I have seen birdstrikes that didn’t leave blood and guts.

An MQ-1/9 UCAV is roughly the same size as an F-16 (though considerably lighter). If one had collided with a 737, I doubt it would have landed in one piece.

The one that gets me is the Global Hawk, which has a larger wingspan than a 757, though admittedly its wings are quite slender, and the fuselage is much smaller.

Yeah, even when there are people around, it’s tough to judge how big a Hawk really is, at least until you park it near another plane

I dont think it was confirmed. No damage and cleared to keep flying.

I’m glad nobody was injured. I hope the drone was very expensive.
