Help me OPPO. I’m beginning to become disillusioned with the S600. I love the car a lot but it’s just such a money pit. I’m seriously considering trading it in on a 07 LS460. Thoughts ?

“’07 LS460" is oddly specific and indicates to me that one side of your brain has already made the decision and kept you researching until you have a specific target car at a specific location picked out. Now, I’m not sure if that side of your brain is right or where the other side is, but you’re clearly here as much for validation as advice.

On the other hand, I’m forbidden by law from encouraging people to switch to more practical cars.

An S600 is a car to date, not marry. You live in different financial realities, and that’s ok.

Trade it in.

While I can totally afford the car it’s just annoying not being able to trust the car. Like I’d trust my 20 year old LS400 on a road trip more than I’d trust my S600.

Trust is a relationship killer. I loved my E90 M3 but I couldn’t trust the bastard.

About 13 or 14. I’ve got a stack of repair invoices to go with it too. I love the car but it is ridiculously unreliable.

Maybe something a *little* on the exotic side to ease the transiton...?

Moving to LS460 leapfrogs over multiple categories of impracticality versus desirability, although a certain degree of risk aversion is understandable at this point...

Guessing the LS460 will be way, way less of a Money pit than any Mercedes. since it if after all a Toyota

You looking for a RWD or AWD?

Doesn’t really matter tbh. My LS400 is find in the winter on blizzaks so it doesn’t concern me.

I’d consider picking up some sports car in the fall with the money I’d save on maintenance.

Having two Lexii ten years apart doesn’t sound like that varied a collection*. Maybe something more off the beaten track, or dump the LS400 in favor of something funny?

If you already have an LS400 for luxo-barge duties, then trade the S600 in for a practical sports car?

I need a newer car for work, and I love my 97 as its a great winter car. It might go away when I import my century in 2022

Trade it for a LS460 L , and let me know how it is.

My wife and I have been all over the map trying to agree on a replacement for her car. That is her current top choice, and I’m looking for evidence to dissuade her.

Seriously, though. It’s not just about money. An S series lives in a shop, vacations in your garage. It’s not a DD.

Oh no you don’t! You are not leaving me alone in my suffering!

Unless you want to be the cliche S600 owner and admit you didn’t know what you were getting into, you must keep it at least 3 years.

I knew what I was getting into, and its not even the financial aspect. The thing that gets me is the lack of dependability. I can’t trust the car for anything and I never even get to drive it in the winter. It breaks my heart thinking about it because I love it to much.

That is a psychological phenomenon called S600 paranoia: the more money we put in, the more unreliable it appears, the less we trust it when in fact the opposite is true. I for one believe there is no oil in my engine and the electric dipstick is lying to me 90% of the time. Obviously that isn’t true, and it just runs funny and lumpy because the more cylinders a car has, the worse it behaves warming up.

Also, you need to put the appropiate Continental ProContact DWS tires on it that most owners have, I promise you it handles great in the snow.

Your S600 is lucky enough to be in the possession of someone who knows what it represents and treats it with the respect (money) it deserves. Just think a while about the cracks S600s fall through once responsible owners like you give up. They become S600s like mine, and it takes years and several times the purchase price to put them right again.

And? It doesn’t matter if there’s oil under it; is there oil IN it?

That’s what cardboard is for my friend. Cardboard and a 5 quart of Mobil 1 oW-40 in the trunk.
