My truck is best truck and you will never convince me otherwise. :P

I feel like starting my own post on why my truck is best truck, but we’re already on the verge of starting a theme day, and we all know how the mods love that.

YOUR TRUCK IS WORSE THAN HIS TRUCK

Yeah :)

My truck has an extra .2 liters of betterness than his truck, therefore is more betterer.

Is you’rs a V8? because that would make it pretty awesome, but still .1 Liter less awesome than mine.

Correct. Though having driven a 5.4L Ford I have to say that mine FEELS about 1-2 litres more awesome.

I am not a fan of the 5.4L engine... not enough low-end.

The 5.4-equipped F150's I’ve driven (2 generations after yours) drove like a 4.8 Silverado, which is statistically 0.6L less awesome. Throw in my weight advantage on top of that and you do the math

Of course, having an older truck means you aren’t so concerned about it’s well-being (most of the time). Therefore you can make up any lack of awesomeness by changing your driving style... I’d have been content with a 4.3 in an old S10

Easy to be a truck. Tough to be a Jeep.

I’m a diehard GM guy, but...

a) I like the Wrangler, though I have no real desire to have one.

b) I DO WANT A JEEP PICKUP YES PLZ

That surprises me, I feel like the 5.4 has more low end than the GM gassers, and dyno charts usually back this up, though I can’t find a direct comparison. The 5.4 still handily out torques Ford’s new 5.0 basically everywhere below 4000 rpm. Above about 3500 rpm though, it’s no contest, the LS really starts to wind up and the 5.4 is about out of steam. The LS is definitely the better engine for go fast and fun, but I still think the 5.4 is the low end king*.

My truck is a ‘99 2v version, and my Dad has an ‘09 with the 3v and six speed (the same generation you drove) and it does feel a little gutless down low. I think a lot of that has to do with the transmission programming and throttle response. I’ve noticed that Ford’s 6 speed, especially the early ones, really like to stay in higher gears, and do a lot of hunting, throttle response is also pretty bad and the throttle has a very spongy feel. If you get the opportunity to drive an 04-08 I think your opinion might change, a ‘99-’03 wont be too bad either, but the 3v with the 4 speed is where it’s at.

The 5.3 in a Colorado is no contest, that thing’s gotta be a hotrod.

I was a Ford fanboy for a while, but having a job that provides me the opportunity to drive every new truck on the market has really helped me develop a much more rounded view and better analyze the strengths and weaknesses of every new truck on the market.

*Compared to the 5.3, the 6.0/6.2 are clearly better.

Maybe the old ones were better, I dunno. What I do know is, the Fords are no slouches—they move out as well as anyone. The power and torque numbers are all there. But for some reason it never felt like that.

There’s a stretch of highway I travel every day where express/collectors lanes split and then branch off again, with the collectors lanes becoming the start of a minor highway. In other words the main highway ends and there’s all sorts of crossing over and slow traffic. Immediately afterwards traffic usually opens up nicely. Now: In my truck I roll on the throttle just enough to hear it making noise and that’s enough. It’s not a fair comparison, because even though I have less power than the Silvy 5.3 I still have less weight—but it’s a benchmark at least. In the F150 I tried to drive the same way, and got nothing. It HAD to downshift to get anything, and to keep up with the guy I was following (who wasn’t going too crazy) iirc it kicked down two. In the 4.8 Silvy there was actually a little more bite before it had to change down but overall it felt the same. Probably the fact that both GM’s are 4-speeds and the Ford was a 5(6?) had something to do with it, but when it kicks down twice I stop blaming the transmission.

Funny thing is, I’ve driven the new F150 too, and I’d say the 5.0 is better down low than the 5.4 actually. So the old 5.4 really must be better.

And you know, I’ve never really thought of the LS as a revvy motor... but now that you mention it, you’re right. At least for the smaller displacements. (LS7 is witchcraft) The 4.8 is an utter turd off the line, but keep your foot in it and as it crosses 3500-4000 rpm is comes unglued. I’d love to see it in a car rather than a truck.

Now you have me wanting to try an old 5.4, damn you :)

Side note: have you ever driven a Triton V10 truck? Not my cup of tea, but that thing had low end for days.

I’m almost positive it’s the transmission, I remember when dad first got his truck I hated the new 6 speed (IIRC ‘09 was the first year). The programming on it is terrible, it stays in as high of a gear as possible, is super reluctant to down shift, so you give it some throttle, then it wakes up, goes down two, and rockets, at which point you let off a little, and it tries to go back up and ends up doing a lot of gear hunting. It’s definitely been improved, but comparing the early ones to the 4 speed, I’ll pick the 4 speed every time.

I’ve driven a friends V10 before, loved it. I’ve got a project 1950 F3, and as soon as I can find a place to work on it I fully intend to cram a V10/5 speed combo in it.
