Having enjoyed my cross country move the other month I’ve been thinking. If you were going to do a Grand Tour what car would you choose? I’ve come to the conclusion that grand touring cars are impossible to be perfect. They have to be fun, yet tolerable to drive for thousands of miles. Have room for luggage and souvenirs, but you wouldn’t want to take a SUV. So what would you take Oppo?

And to add a twist and a dash of realistic hope. It must be under 15k. And no Tavarish specials, because if your 15 year old Aston Martin dies in West Texas. Good luck finding parts, much less a mechanic, to fix it.

GO!

Kinja'd!!!

I can’t come up with an answer myself. So a picture of a Tavarish special for you.

This 650i. If it doesn’t have to be a traditional grand tourer, I’d probably pick a 128i.

I did several long distance trips in my Subaru WRX “bugeye” wagon and loved every minute of it. good cargo room, fast, agile...

My own car. Just take a spare quart of oil or two and it’ll make it the whole way.

I feel you. I moved in my Integra. The only complaint I had was not enough power to go fast on the interstate without doing 5k rpm.

Good pick. From what I hear they have a stupid amount of room.

Looks like an old man’s car

Dirt cheap (less than $10K) and parts are inexpensive and easy to find

It’s basically a DB7 with Mondeo parts.

I’d take the 1 series. Being a BMW I can’t imagine it’d be bad on the highway. The only problem I had with my Integra on my trip was not being able to do 70mph below 4k rpm.

Yeah, I’m at about 3800 at 70 MPH.

I can confirm it’s a great highway car. I put 3500 miles on a 128i back in April/May of last year.

Being of a certain age and favoring domestics there’s only one car I could chose.

Thunderbird Super Coupe.

I would prefer a 1995 though.

Here we go: http://columbus.craigslist.org/cto/5926340560.html

I wouldn’t want to own that thing long-term (if I were getting something in the class to own, I’d be more inclined to go for an RSX-S or a Celica GT-S, and I’d want to remove some mods from that one, but that’s just an example), but a manual 3.2 quattro TT would do nicely. Hatch with pretty great cargo space, some displacement and therefore a bit of low-end torque to keep the revs down on the highway, and VW knows how to make a highway cruiser that can also be fun. And, ultimately, it’s a short wheelbase Golf mechanically.

I already have a tour planned for... some day. I call it the Cold War Cruise. Starting in Lisbon, driving all the way to Moscow through (almost) all the major Euro capitals. With cold war cars, obviously, so a 1959 Lincoln and whatever else I or compatriots can round up - that fails your 15k miles limit, but I’m pretty sure giant ‘50s barges can carry enough of their own spares and are easy enough to work on that almost any event won’t take them out.

It it comfortable enough, quick enough, parts will be readily available and that C5 FRC Z06 is a fairly subtle vehicle to pound out the miles very quickly without getting stopped.
