How do you install a seal when the thing the seal goes into is colder than the coldest thing in your freezer?

Kinja'd!!!

My motor mounts came in today, along with some other parts because when you’re paying for overseas shipping you combine orders.

Kinja'd!!!

Among the parts are a pair of trans input shaft seals, cause I noticed the one in there was weeping a little. Not a lot, but worth replacing while I had the engine out.

Conventional method for inserting seals is freeze the bugger so it shrinks, and with the temperature differential from where it goes it slides in nicely and snugs up when it warms back up. But the Niva’s been sitting basically outside for six months, and it’s -25°C out there, (warmer than I expected!) which means with the freezer only going to -22 the best I can do is get the two to about the same temperature. It’s supposed to warm up to -15 next week, but I don’t know if that’ll be enough to make much difference...

Halp..?

Keep the hood closed and put a small ceramic heater under the engine. Block the radiator if it helps. Trapped heat is pretty effective and rises and in between mounts close the hood and have a beer.

Best idea I have anyway.

Well, don’t force it, it’ll be bad for the seal.

I like that idea, just be ultra careful not to melt anything (wires etc) or electrocute yourself in the process (dripping water from melting ice).

Maybe take the beer and give it to a friend/neighbor to allow the use of a garage? Push her around in neutral until a neighbor takes pity?

Get your hands (preferably gloved) on some dry ice?

(Not sure if that may damage the seal)

LOL I had the same problem a year ago. I was replacing the front seal in my Mustang’s timing cover, and put the seal in the freezer. But when I took it back out, I realized that my timing cover was just as cold, having been sitting in the unheated garage. Fortunately, my timing cover was off the engine so I could just bring it inside and set it over the heat register for a while.

For your case, Flynorcal’s got the right idea. A small portable heater should do the trick.

All I can say is good luck, ya old codger.

Do I even wanna know why there’s no game board?

I refuse to. The only way I Disney is with a pretty lady. (So never... sigh). The cold doesn’t bother me either, it just makes life interesting.

This will be an interesting challenge in the middle of nowhere. I’m running into the city tomorrow to hit a wrecking yard (extreme cold warning! Woot!) so might have to do some searching. It’s 100km back so I’ll have to find some way to insulate it. Hard to imagine having to worry about things thawing this time of year but there you go.

It’s Banagrams, so there is no game board (if you look closely there’s no score on the tiles). But I wasn’t exactly playing the game and I was by myself so I’ll say no you probably don’t want to know.

Well, the Niva is technically already in the neighbour’s garage... But it’s not much of a garage, mostly it’s just out of the wind. Mostly out of the wind, that is. I live in a town with a population of ~15, so it’s not like there’s much option. Plus with the engine out the transmission needs supported so moving it is pretty awkward.

Engine’s out, hood’s unbolted and won’t set back on very easily. I might still try a space heater pointed right at it, maybe toss a blanket over the empty bay or something. Seems like the best idea. And I’ll just set the seals outside cause they’ll be colder there than in the freezer, lol.

I’m Canadian. Everything we do with seals is bad for them.

Actually it wouldn’t be that big a deal to unbolt the bellhousing and bring it inside... Hmm.

Oh! Well, there you go, then. Unbolting it would probably give you better leverage for driving the seal in anyway.

Sadly it’s a rental and I don’t want evicted. But that doesn’t mean I haven’t already measured the picture window...

Also it would be super awkward because the engine is currently out, so I’d have to put the engine back in to drive it in to drop the trans to put the seal in. Or just put the seal in before putting the engine back in...

They’re forecasting single digits (in C!) for the weekend so I’ll just do it then. I got two seals in case of screwing up (for $2 each why not?) so if that fails I’ll pull the bell housing and bring it inside before attempting the second one.
