So a friend posted this on twitter asking if anyone knew what it was. I figured Oppo would be the place to find an answer. So... anyone know what it is? Anyone know about its history?

Update: The photo was taken at the Bear River Bird Refuge in northern Utah.

If I had to guess it’s been so highly specialized that it’ll never be known. Maybe a T, but maybe someone can guess better by the windshield cowl.

It looks very home-built. Early prototype of a half-track maybe?

Any context for the photo?

Some of the guesses on Twitter have been that it’s a modified T, so you’re not alone in that line of thinking.

I have no clue, but I’m guessing y’all are right.

I thought at first it might have something to do with the construction of the panama canal, but on second inspection I think it’s from somewhere else. The car might be early enough, 1904-1914, but I’m not sure.

The basis car is a Franklin from the early 20s, I don’t know anything about the attachments.

The vehicle is a 1922 Franklin Model 9-B, but Franklin never made trucks, so I’m not sure what’s going on there. The cabin and bed could be from a late model Ford Model T Truck, but again, I’m not so sure. Or maybe it’s a Model T with a Franklin 9-B hood and front cowl, who knows. The insteresting thing is that Franklin made air cooled cars, so perhaps the people in the picture needed the air cooled engine for some crazy aplication and just made themselves a truck.

It’s actually a half-track.

Probably chosen for light weight, I would guess.

Did some more digging. It was probably used during the late 20's when the Bear River had just been declarred a National Wildlife Refuge and they were building miles of dikes in order to restore the wetlands in the area. I’m guessing they improvised this truck as a sort of suport vehicle for the operation.

Sorry in advance for any possible bad english, it has been a while since I wrote anything in another language.

I think you may be right. I was going to say it was a Holmes at first but it does look like a Franklin badge just above the grill.

the model T had a factory option believe it or not like this, but this isn’t a “T”

I have to say that I am very impressed. Some of the other pictures are of them putting up dykes and construction. You’re probably completely on the mark.

(I’m the person cataloging the photographs. It was found in storage with very little context.)

I was going to guess the area as being great salt lake, but its pretty close, as the bird refuge is a part of the lake. That mud is no joke.
