Wait, what? It still has IL plates on it.

Kinja'd!!!

This was taken some time in the 1980s, before the end of Communist rule.

Years ago you did see imported cars with US plates in Finland quite often. If you moved (back) to Finland you could bring your car as “moving goods” and get hefty tax discount. You were able to use the US plates for ~6 months before you needed to register it to Finland.

Maybe there was similar system in Poland?

You can take the Pulaski out of Illinois, but you can’t take the Illinois out of Pulaski.

Are we sure this isn’t just a Polish neighborhood in IL?

I think it’s a 1977 Pontiac Grand Prix.

I imported a Packard couple of years ago. It was normal import not moving goods. It came with Wisconsin plates and I left them on, but attached the temporary sticker plates to the windows. After couple of months I got the official plates and I replaced the Wisconsin plates with them.

You shouldn’t have non-valid plates visible besides the official ones but people generally disregard this rule as it is very obvious which are the official ones.

And that’s how a mediocre old American car suddenly becomes the hottest thing at the show. I mean, a ~10 year old intermediate Pontiac or a brand new Wartburg - which would you want to live with?

My friend’s wife is Polish - she’s about my age, so only lived under Communism as a very young child. However, I gave her a ride in my 1984 Town Car once and she was amazed at how many features it had for being so old. She thought of pretty basic stuff like air conditioning and power windows as things that only came on much, much newer cars.

Packards are awesome but you don’t find much of them here. Mine’s a 22nd series (‘49) and currently waiting for new suspension bushings and a new battery.
