Kinja'd!!!

Read this piece and tell me what Jack Baruth is having in his pipe right now.

In fact, why not we argue about the Civic-R’s CVT option ? Is it good? Is it bad? Is it sacrilege? Is it gonna be worth it? Do we nuke Honda because they’re gonna do this? I mean, it’s an option, sure, but do we nuke them for that?

Have at it. But first, tell me what Jack Baruth is sniffing.

He’s not wrong... CVT deliver all the power, all the time... A well built CVT is in theory the fastest. But it’s not fun, sounds terrible and got the throttle response of a Garrett 106mm... But hey, it delivers all the power, all the time. If that’s what you want, go for it! I’m not touching that with a stick though...

I would honestly like to see a manually controlled CVT.

I mean, let’s face it... in theory, a CVT is a great idea. Unfortunately the programming lets them down a lot. So... give me full control over it and we’ll call it a deal. Preferably with ratios ranging from “creeper” to “idle at 80MPH”.

I drove a lawnmower like that before. Had both a throttle control and a speed control.

He missed the target by a little.

He made some really wonderful arguments for taking a CVT over a traditional automatic. Nothing he said addresses the reasons for three pedals versus two.

Also, starting out by aligning the Type R with McLarens is a great way to shoot your own argument in the foot.

I stopped reading Jack Baruth when he said a Honda Accord coupe is better than a FRS/BRZ/86.

These are just future parts cars. In 12 years when the manual Civic R is still 8k these will be 1.5k waiting to donate their fenders to a manual car.

You made it sound like he was going to say something insanely idiotic, like that CVTs are bad.

“And if you don’t? Well, you can always join the hundreds of thousands of drivers out there who take a clutch-pedal-equipped Honda to work every day. I’m one of them. It’s a good time. You should give it a shot, before it’s too late to even have the choice. But if you can’t do it, then you’ll be just fine leaving your Type R in “D” and letting it do its own thing. Luckily for you, I’ve already given you a list of excuses for doing it.”

OK, so the Toyobaru twins are anemic as fuck, but jee, man, come on. An Accord Coupe is barely even half the sportscar the BRZ is.

Yeah, I think he’s missing the point. All transmissions have an experience associated with them. The reason McLaren sells the P1 with a fact is because it’s a experience that buyers want: it’s fast but it also makes the right noises, isn’t a big compromise amongst enthusiasts, and has good throttle response. This mythical CVT is fast, yes, but in order to get there you end up with exhaust drone, bad throttle response, and compromise everywhere. A mythical CVT could maybe fix half of those things but it would give something up as well (most likely a massive fuel economy hit for throttle response).

If CVTs had column-mounted shifters like in rally cars...

or a single-paddle shifter...

I’ll allow the CVT option.

Considering in his “You can speed just do it in a big truck if you want to get away with it.” article he references his 1997 F150 XL with the 300 I6, I’d say he has had a few to many hits to the head.

Praising a CVT in a hot hatch is symptomatic of this as well.

If a budget GT car is what you’re looking for an Accord coupe is waaaaaaaaaay better than an FRS. But if you’re looking for a Sports coupe than an FRS is better. They aren’t even actually comparable, in any way.

Heck, control the throttle with your hand and the CVT with your foot.

Actually that might make it easier to manage in some ways.

Exactly! Which is why Baruth was a fool for mentioning the two in the same sentence. It’d be like bemoaning the fact that a Highlander can’t go off-road as well as a Wrangler.
