I can already see the man in tears when the feds come to crush his Scirocco...

On a different note, Volkswagen should really offer Euro models in the US. You really miss out on many great cars.

He made the process sound simple and cheap. I would only believe it if he went into a very detailed description of what they’ve have done. Follow that up with the car delivery.

this guy is the worst kind of internet bullshitter. worse than anything any stupid middle school kid could come up with. VW is not going to do emissions and crash certification on something they don’t sell here just to sell one car. from the reddit thread:

2016 Scirocco R. I have a Volkswagen dealership a few miles away from my house in Tennessee. I drive a Ford Focus hatchback that started giving me really bad engine problems, plus my son is getting older and I wanted something sportier but great to travel in. I was looking and test driving the Golf vehicles and came within a minute of buying one. I noticed the dealer had a toy car of a Scirocco on his desk and I asked him if I could test drive one. He informed me it’s a European exclusive and my son was very intrigued by that. I went home and did a TON of research on the car and arranged a meeting with Volkswagen TN to get the car to meet American standards. I had to contact the EPA, DOT, IIHS, and the Department of Customs. It was a lot of work, but she’s mine next month. The shipping company sails here 1 time every 2 months.

Unbelievable....yes, definitely unbelievable. But not in the “holy cow, that’s awesome” form, but in the strict definition of unbelievable as “something not believable”.

Don’t worry though, the Scirocco R is FWD anyway.

Hmmm.

I really doubt this.

Yes the Scirocco shares the same platform with the Mk5 Golf and several other bits but it’d behave differently enough in a crash that the NHTSA would lose their sh*t about it.

Now if it was a case of 3 door and 5 door Mk7 Golf, I would probably think it possible-ish.

Complete BS. The only thing I can think of is that while VW might be willing to sell him one, there’s no way he can register it. That said, he could keep it for 25 years as an off-road / show vehicle only before registering it.

Kinja'd!!! "fourvalleys" (fourvalleys)
01/05/2017 at 08:27, STARS: 1

Actually, he couldn’t even do that. A car has to be imported at 25+. Anything brought here before that can’t be driven on the roads, ever. At least, that’s the rules.*

I suppose you could probably try to fool them, but is that worth the effort to have a trailer-only car for another 15 years?

*Notable exception for Show & Display cars... but that’s a specific list of models and you can only ever drive it 2500 miles per year. The Scirocco is not one of those models.

Even if it’s not BS, his mistake is posting about it online. Drawing attention to yourself is a surefire way to get way too much scrutiny.

Either it’s BS or he’s way way way too confident that this is legal and won’t ever get seized or crushed. Unless he or VW crash/smog tested it (they didn’t), it’s not legal.

Wouldn’t he have to buy multiple models to get them crash tested by the DOT? Plus emissions and regulations testing.

Even if I did believe him, I can’t fathom someone shelling out hundreds of thousands of dollars on a VW Scirocco.

... and arranged a meeting with Volkswagen TN to get the car to meet American standards.

To me, this is the part that totally gives away the bullshit.

One does not federalize a car to US standards by simply “arranging a meeting”.

The only way to skip the lengthy crash testing and emissions testing to prove compliance is when a foreign model is nearly identical to an USDM version (think Canadian version vs. US version). You might be able to get a manufacturer to write a letter declaring these two versions are essentially identical. There is no way VW would declare a European Scirocco to be near identical to a US Golf (or anything else).

I think the only way this would work is if he managed to get someone (either VW or a bunch of Feds) to agree that the car is “Substantially Similar” to one sold in the US (presumably the Mk5 Golf?). That would let it be imported, but it would seem to fall far outside of what is usually considered substantially similar (see Jalopnik’s explanation here: http://jalopnik.com/here-are-the-four-legal-ways-to-import-a-car-to-the-uni-1682067632

Ah, thanks for the clarification - I figured you could bring in any car as long as you didn’t put it on the road. It’s not worth the effort for a Scirocco for sure.

The only VW cars that would sell in the US would be the EU Passat (if they can bring the price low enough which I doubt) and the Amarok/Transporter/Caddy which would get chicken tax’d.

Probably. Mercedes sells the Metris van in the US, why shouldn’t VW give the T6 a try then. Though the T6 is rather expensive and afaik not available with a V6 nor gasoline engines. But I’m not sure. But the Euro Passat sedan and wagon and a new Mk7 Jetta would be appreciated I believe.

Too bad that VW is in a very awkward situation in the US with the Passat and Jetta not really being the Camry and Corolla VW had hoped them to be.

DSG transmissions shitting the bed and faulty timing chain tensioners should be less common by now. At least one would think. I don’t really know to be honest.
