Which they never sold in the US, so... someone slapped a body kit on an first-gen Outlander, which I *think* was basically the same body as the AirTrek with a different front fascia.

Yep, first gen Outlander (with a body kit to make it look like a JDM Airtrek) which was essentially a lifted wagon on the Galant/Lancer platform. Not many of these left on the road - I forgot how much more like an Outback than a modern crossover/SUV they were.

That’s an AirTrek Ralliart! Turbo 4G63 and AWD.

Interesting. File to things I never knew existed. Kinda like the SG Forester STi then - take generic compact sedan platform, puff up into lifted wagon, then lower it back down, slap a turbo on it and call it a performance model. People complain that the Germans started this crap, but the Japanese were doing it 15 years ago. (And doing it better IMO.). Also I miss the old Subaru vs. Mitsubishi days. Sad what Mitsubishi has become over the last 10 years.

Good news then that Mazda has taken over Mitsu. Mazda has become just pedestrian enough (and popular) that they can afford to release a “fun” brand. Bring back the fun and quirkiness of Mazda, under a known name like Mitsubishi. I’m not always a huge Japanese car fan, but I really hope it works out.

But where was it that it would be so dirty and abandoned? And why would you swap an Airtrek front on anyways? Sure it looks better than a stock Outlander, but so does a contemporary CR-V. And all that effort for a nicer fascia for naught with that terrible body kit and hood scoop.
