Kinja'd!!!

Upstairs neighbors had a new year’s eve party, breaking up at about 3:30 in the morning. I didn’t feel like crawling out of bed, going downstairs then outside to knock on their door to tell them to shut the fuck up, especially since I had to be at work the next morning at 0730, so I did my best to sleep through it.

Whilst I appreciate that they don’t smoke in the building, I can still smell the smoke seeping in around the door. And when I stepped outside on Sunday morning, the steps, the lawn, the entry, the sidewalk - all covered in cigarette butts. Normally I wouldn’t care, and would expect them to clean up their guest’s mess (after reminding them that this makes our place look like shit), but when I reached into my mailbox I discovered that it too had been used as an ashtray. Oh, hell no. Although it made me a few minutes late for work I scrounged up all of their mess and left it at their doorstep. Nearly a week later it’s still all there.

And the laundry area in the basement - all of the tenants have had an understanding that we would share the washers and dryers, especially when one is out of service. But my detergent and anti-static sheets are NOT community property. A few months ago I noticed my dryer sheets out of the cabinet, which is surprising since I never remove the box. I went down to the basement this evening and once again, the box is out of the cabinet and the quantity of sheets even lower. Boys, I know your mommy and daddy probably provided these things for you, but I AM NOT YOUR PARENT - buy your own shit, ya little pukes...

Keep that stuff in your crib, especially something small like detergent and fabric softener sheets. Having shitty neighbors is the worst so I hope they get evicted one day.

I hate lugging that crap, as well as my dirty clothes, through the snow to the basement entrance, but I suspect that I don’t have much of a choice unless I put a lock on the cabinet.

Wow, assholes.

The new years festivities I attended were off somewhere else, rather than in an apartment building. People should never throw load alcohol fueled parties in fucking apartment buildings unless they’re quiet old people ones.

That is gross. Sorry you have shitty neighbors.

I definitely feel you but people will be assholes and use your stuff because they are too lazy/broke/stupid/fuckin entitled to get it themselves.

Might be worse there lol. You’ve got old people who will file noise complaints if you sneeze too loud!

Make a 2017 goal owning your own home so you don’t have to deal with this shit.

Maybe not 2017, but it’s a definite goal for 2018.

In October the Mazda5 will be paid off and I don’t plan on replacing it. I might spend a car payment or two on a new(er) Mac, but after that the savings is going to be split between paying down debt and saving up for a down payment.

Housing is so ridiculously cheap here in STL that I shouldn’t have much problem getting a mortgage payment that is significantly cheaper than what I’m paying in rent.

I just realized that in just 5 short years I will be old enough to purchase a home in the retirement community next to my old high school.

After reading so many tales, including those on Jalopnik, about asshole neighbors I try to make a concerted effort not to be one. Sometimes I wonder if I’m the one being a jerk when I expect people to be quiet at 3:00 in the morning or clean the shit off the lawn and steps from the dog that they’re not supposed to have in this no pets building or to clean up after their guests or to not steal laundry supplies. Am I just expecting too much? Or is common courtesy a historical relic, like me?

People will be assholes, and everybody is an asshole sometimes. But different levels of assholery.

Like the time a friend and I were building something from scratch in my backyard with lots of power tools at 1 AM. Nobody complained, but damn they should have.

The worst part about living in an apartment is that some people are assholes. Out last upstairs neighbors got kicked out because they we constantly fighting. Not just yelling but actually physically fighting each other. Disturbing not just us but neighbors in the next house over. That was almost a year ago and the apartment has been empty since. It’s been nice.

It can happen even if you own a home. I had a problem with a neighbor two doors down across the street. He played his music so loud it rattled my windows. It was so loud that he couldn’t hear me banging on his door, nor could he hear the police banging on his door when they arrived. He repeated this pattern until his landlord finally kicked him out.

I still have issues with some neighbors who play their music too loud, but it’s usually people visiting them and it’s car stereos designed to rattle the fillings out of your teeth.

My mom had it worse. A drug dealer and his brother moved in across the street. She had stuff stolen from her shed a few weeks later. A few months later, she was home when they tried to break in. They escaped through the woods when the sheriff arrived.

Her problems cleared up when one of their friends tried to steal some of the drugs. One of the brothers stabbed him, the other finished him off with a hammer. Now they are both in jail.

These are the joys of neighbors.

As a guy who’s been on both sides of these arguments, I think you gotta cut them some slack for noise on New Years. But that’s it. Everything else... Yeah sounds like you have some shitty neighbors.

I remember when I got my first apartment (admittedly not that long ago) and my neighbors upstairs rode skateboards throughout their home. Doing tricks. On tile and laminate flooring. Longest three months of my life.

I’m OK with a little party noise on the first. I don’t really mind their other parties too much, but they really should knock it off around midnight or so instead of three or four in the morning. I think most laws say something about 10 PM for quiet hours, but midnight is OK. Just turn down the bass and keep out of the kitchen; their kitchen backs right up against my upstairs bedroom wall. Keep it in the living room and it’ll be acceptable. I don’t want to be a dick but sometimes I just wish people would think a little more about the needs of others.
