I’m having a bit of a problem figuring out how to wire the ignition system since everything is a frankenstein of parts. I need my ‘64 ignition switch to play nicely with the ‘77 coil and starter. So far I’ve tried to get the starter motor to run off the weird ‘64 relay and I can can get the motor to spin but not engage the flywheel.

does it need a full 12v to engage?is it getting the full 12v? is there another terminal to kick in the bendix? is the bendix sticking ?

is the starter/bendix adjusted to mesh with the flywheel?

Yeah, so I can get it to engage by simply bypassing everything and touching a cable from the battery to the engage terminal on the solenoid attached to the starter, but I can’t get it to work at all with the ignition switch or anything else.

and you have power to the ignition switch right? have you checked to make sure that you have a solid 12v coming out of the switch when you turn the key?

I have power because when I turn the key the starter spins. Haven’t checked if it is 12 or not yet though.

sometimes the switches also get a bit of corrosion on the terminal ends when they set for a while, and you gotta turn them and get the contacts freshened up again.......... just noticed something though, does the 77 coil and starter set up NEED the relay off of the 64 set up?

and how are your grounds? they can play all kinds of havoc. grounds from bat to block, block to body, body to bat, body to chassis.

oh, and make sure you run a voltage drop for the coil(unless its a full 12v coil)

maybe a good pic of the classic relay?

No they don’t need the 64 relay, but I have no clue how to wire the 77 starter relay to the 64 ignition switch and the rest of the electric system. The coil is a full 12V coil and the rest of the car has been converted from 6V setup to a full 12V setup. I messed with grounds all day to day cleaning contact points and ensuring everything was tight and working properly. Up top is the 64 diagram and below is the 77 diagram.

BEFORE you wire ANYTHING, read the WHOLE MESS that i wrote. if i am not mistaken, your problems are because you have a 64 switch, that uses positive ground, and you have an engine(77 right?) that uses negative ground.you jusdt have to switch a few things around and it SHOULD all work........

when i do wiring, its not very pretty, but it usually works. from the look of it though, you need to focus on the relay part of the 77. provided the relay is labeled the same,

you run the big battery cable to the big post on the starter. from the same post as the the battery cable you run a 12 gauge wire to c1 on the relay. also from the battery cable on the starter you run a hot wire to the ignition switch

NOW i being an astute observer, JUST NOW noticed that the 64 set up is a positive ground set up. so youll have to rewire your ignition switch a BIT.

run the hot wire to the in terminal of the switch,64 diagram and from the #1 terminal 64 diagram run a 12 gauge wire to the w1 terminal on the 77 relay

then from the c2 terminal on the 77 relay, run that to the first small terminal next to the battery cable. that is the one that engages the starter.

the little terminal furthest away from the battery cable(on the starter) is an assist to the coil, to make sure that it gets a SOLID 12v during cranking, but only during cranking does it have power flowing through it.

NOW if you decided to rewire your starter switch, MAKE FOR SURE that you disconnect ALL the OTHER CONNECTIONS THAT GO TO GROUND OR YOU WILL BURN STUFF UP.

if you dont want to run the complicated relay, you PROBABLY dont need to. just get a momentary switch that has 12vpositive to it(use the big battery post, and run a 12gauge wire to it. and on the output side, run it to the starter terminal JUST next to the battery cable. it should spin the starter fine.

..............i hope i wrote that clear enough, sometimes it makes better sense in my head, than in print........... let me know.............
