This tool is a must have if you plan on working on old Japanese motorcycles. It’s a Vessel Impacta JIS #2 . The Japanese used to use their own screws (not sure if they still do) called JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) screws. They look like phillips heads but aren’t. If you use a phillips heads driver you will probably strip out every head.

this is a problem for my truck because the front oil pump plate (a common leak) uses these. The typical work around is to buy brand new #2 philips chucks and pound them into the head, then use an impact gun. Seems to work.

...considering that looks exactly like all of my screwdrivers I bought here in Japan, I assume so?

I own an older German motorcycle with Japanese carbs, first time I rebuilt the carbs I stripped all the JIS screws on them, so I replaced them with metric allen screws so they match the rest of the bike ;)

Yeah,I stripped out every screw on one side of the engine before wising up. I also replaced them all with allen screws.

Only drivers I’ve ever spent my own money on. These things really are a godsend

mine is a BMW, so literally every other fastener on it is a metric Allen. By stripping the JIS screws and replacing them with allens I can now work on the carbs with the factory toolkit ;)

Thanks.
Since the JIS has a totally flat surface does it grip better?

You will know it is a jis screw if there is a dot between one of the crosses of the Phillips.

For being 40+ year old engine case screws, they definitely seems to grip a lot better.
