For a Toyobaru, I’d rather get blown than sucked.

Nahh, load based boost is way more fun

Superchargers don’t whine, they sing!

My reasoning is based on longevity and adding power where it’s needed most, not necessarily fun factor alone. haha

Longevity? A turbo puts a whole lot less stress on a motor for any given power level. S/Cs tent to start bending FA/20 rods around 300hp or so (on PD blowers, I hate centris) but bottom end on a turbo is good for at least 350.

Heat is a concern, though there seem to be pretty good ways around that at this point. I did a lot of research, drove a few examples, and a small turbo just does and feels better on the chassis to me.

Fair enough. I was basing it more off of the very broad assumptions/observations I’ve made/seen of superchargers offering better low-end power and more aftermarket turbo’ed engines going boom because of running higher levels of boost over your typical supercharged motor. I haven’t researched much into the topic on this platform specifically, since I plan to keep the car NA forever. My car will get a Spec 86 legal cage before it gets any forced induction. haha

Lol, my car is going to transition into more of a street lulz machine with the Miata taking over primary track/racing duty. I think 260 wheel on a nice conservative 5 psi GTX2867 is just the ticket for reliable fun boost.

If I found a $200 Miata and had garage space, I’d likely do the same. lol

Granted, if I found a $200 Miata where I live about 98% of it would be missing due to rust. haha

Thankfully, only about 5% of my Miata is gone to rust. Considering it’s something I bought for a lark, it drives surprisingly well. The motor pulls a lot stronger than I expected actually! Some decent tires and and alignment I’ll be ready to start real development as soon as autocross season starts, with the goal being at least one track day before the end of the year.

Then I’ll boost that as well with the free turbo kit I just fell into. :)

You’re going to need something to back some of that up.

Turbos produce more heat (by restricting exhaust flow), and provide more power ‘spikes’ to stress rods.

If you’re looking for the highest peak number, you can get it with a turbo, at the expense of all around gains. A S/C gives linear, ‘always on’ power at the expense of fuel efficiency.

It’s simple really, on an FA20 rods start to go at 350 wheel horsepower with a turbo. Large roots blowers have about a 50hp parasitic loss so you’ll only get to about 300 wheel before you’re in the same danger zone in terms of forces on the rod.
