This seems like a pretty excessive use of salt.

Fun fact about the Seattle area: yes, cars last longer here for various reasons including mild winters, BUT we salt the crap out of anything if it dips below 32 degrees, even if it is completely unnecessary.

Their DOT must hire from Michigan. Difference is, in MI, the DOT salts but doesn’t plow enough, even if the snow cover is significant.

I think many private lot owners are afraid of being sued if someone slips, so they treat the hell out of their surfaces. City of Bellevue also loves to apply de-icer and gloppy sand/dirt chunks everywhere at the mere hint of freezing temps. I suspect it is reactionary stuff from the 2008 snow event, which caught everyone unprepared.

I’m often amazed at how long they last here. It’s not like Los Angeles, which seems to keep them running practically forever, but it’s way better than anywhere else I’ve seen that it gets this cold. The thing that really lasts here is rubber, which is something that goes out in SoCal, but nobody cares because it rarely rains.

I hate salt. I used to live somewhere they used it extensively and it was extremely hard on cars.

There’s a potential, “winter weather event,” in Raleigh on Saturday and they started adding brine to the roads today.

When my sister worked in Snoqualmie, she was very surprised how calm everyone was to snow compared to the people in Kent. Then again, Snoqualmie is in the mountains.

Doesn’t it rain all the time? You’d think the constant moisture alone would cause them to rust prematurely.

You should come to Ohio, where on a sunny winter day the road turns white as it dries.

exactly - you’d be surprised how many “oops, I slipped in your parking lot now give me money” claims their are.
