Got Dirt Rally for Christmas. Holy COW is it hard! I was upside down within the first 10 seconds.
I have gotten better in the last week but I can’t believe how realistic it is.
I really miss playing Rallyspot Challenge 2 but I think this is better.

Start with the Fulvia or Mini. Once you’re comfortable with that move up to the Alpine or any of the 70's cars. For AWD, start with group A, not B. Do NOT drive the 037 untill you consider yourself a rally god.

Agreed. I play on xbox with a regular controller and it’s nearly impossible. I started in the Alpine, and for faster courses it’s very difficult to keep on track. Tried moving up to the Stratos, and it’s just gotten worse. ... Maybe I should stop doing MR vehicles?
Generally I’m noticing that racing sims are getting too realistic for me to use a regular controller. While it is possible to give small steering inputs, that’s usually difficult to actually do. Might have to actually get a proper wheel sometime!

Just wait until you get to the modern WRC machines. This remains my proudest moment: My first time driving a modern WRC car, my first time ever driving this stage. And it was at night. I managed to snag the 21st-fastest time in the world (at the time). It was absolutely exhilarating in the moment, and I probably would have cracked the top 10 had I not gotten a teensy bit overzealous and taken the “big jump” pacenote flat-out.

DiRT Rally pretty much requires either a wheel or a lot of skill, it’s nowhere near as arcadey as previous Dirt games, Rallysport, Sega Rally etc.

Oh shit, didn’t realize there were mods for it. Need to look into some of them now because I like it as a sim, but can’t really do it seriously because I know how forgiving the damage model it.

It really is the toughest i’ve ever played. Switching back and forth from this to forza (fm6 or horizon3) has proved challenging for me.

I remember jumping from finishing the first season using the Fulvia and Mini into the Mk II Escort, and immediately thinking, “Holy shit, I’m not ready for this!” Boost+RWD+giant windshield banner obscuring 30% of my view = dead.
