Kinja'd!!!

We gave each other approving nods at the gas station this morning, but then he was gone before I could take a better picture.

That’s one thing I love about driving the Alfa; I get to do the “approving car guy nod” with people. Before I just had to give the thumbs up and look like a dork.

I tend to get and return approval nodes from any guy in a (used as intended) modified truck, Guys in their assphalt queens are oblivious.

Edit: That includes this one guy in a NAS 110, pretty sure he had no idea what he was actually driving and only bought it so he could brag about how much he paid.

Trying to compliment people on their cars in my work Yaris is the worst. I usually just get weird looks in return, and at best I get “Thanks, and uh, nice.....Yaris...”

I think the only exception was a dude I really threw off by complimenting his older XJR. He seemed very pleasantly surprised that someone noticed it.

Do you spot any mods on this 90? I’m asking because I might miss things, but I don’t see any myself. Of course my sense is that the fewer mods a Defender has, the more likely it is to be a necessity offroader (like in HHFP’s case, TEH SNOWZ) and not a pavement princess.

I’m not noticing anything other than the factory stuff, the panels and paint also look pristine so my guess this is for grocery getting and/or maybe your odd poorly maintained access road.

For Defenders I find the more “used” it looks the more likely it’s being used as nature intended. I’m also closer to East Coast Rovers than you are so the chances of encountering overbuilt rich yuppy Defenders is higher.

It’s probably fall/winter/spring only. It doesn’t have a TROPICAL ROOF (R) like a Series.

Did you see my most recent symptom of barge flu?

I figured, but I don’t have an eye for subtle mods on a D90 (like fender flare upgrades for 1/2" wider, ooooh) and HHFP’s pic isn’t that detailed.

I have not, but I’m reading it now. I got stuck into my Series over the break and only resurfaced this week so my Oppo reading was light and sporadic.

I’m finding more factory original stuff than I expected. It still has the static seat belts with the Rover tags on them amongst other things.

At some point we need to find one of those mid-benches for my brother’s. Somehow, it went missing before we got the truck - maybe around the time somebody played engine-swapsies or shortly before, but after they ran it along an obstacle on the right... Abused, it was.

Apart from the driver’s seat and the rear benches, the leather is in very good condition. I’m going to refresh the rest and keep them, I’m also only going to upgrade to a 5 main bearing 2 1/4 diesel because the more I think about it, the more I feel modernizing a truck - this original - too much would be a sin.

I will still be doing the custom canvas roof but that was always going to be bolt on only so I could put the safari roof back on at any time.

My brother’s, since we’ll be replacing/repairing the T-brackets regardless, I’m going to be modifying to have middle half-doors and use sectioned door posts. It’s actually shockingly easy to do, and as we had spare door-split galvy trim, I cut two pieces down to use for that.

Was planning to keep my T-brackets as is with a cross hoop on top, do split doors for the rear seats and a tailgate for the back.

I thought about doing a cross-hoop between the T-brackets, but then I decided since things were Getting Hacked Up anyway, I might as well make them split down to half-door level. If I put a roll hoop in, it would work better aesthetically to have it tie on *instead* of the upper half of the door post. I will probably make another Santana-style rear half door for his rather than doing a gate.

I thought about doing door level as well, but I want the option of being able to stick the safari roof back on and that’s much easier with the T-Bracket in place. It also makes mounting seat belts easier and you don’t have to worry about moving anything when swapping roofs.

I’m (a) less concerned with shoulder belt brackets, (b) less concerned with how hard the swap is (will have a single big nut/fastener each side), and (c) not looking to enable a canvas top fit - e.g. having open top, fill between upper doors. Even if I were trying to do canvas, I’d probably come up with a separate flashing piece to go on the roll hoop than try to use the normal door post. It may even be convenient to leave the upper posts and their seals attached to the roof.

Kinja'd!!!

I’m basing mine off this with a few modifications/improvements. I figure a hoop across the t-brackets with the extended series brackets will add better rigidity to the canvas roof itself.

I have nieces who enjoy going to Island Beach State Park with me so shoulder restraints would put my in laws more at ease. They already look sideways at the 88 as though it’s going to crush them to death then and there lol.

01/04/2017 at 16:20, STARS: 1

All it really takes to do that way *in theory* is a full length 109 pickup canvas with the sides replaced with 88 canvas, two sets of over-door fillers to splice, and a set of rear door edge tabs. All it takes extra my way is two extra custom pieces for the door posts. Either way, not bad. As long as the roll hoop is at equal height with the roof support hoop, you’re golden.

For me, it’s all about enabling full half-door “flush deck” operation. I’m going to be reinforcing the T-brackets for better support of the rear doors and better cross bracing under the seat, so it won’t *need* the bracing over the top for rigidity.

Gotcha, I can see how being able to fold down the windshield and have a completely flat deck is appealing. Hell it would look awesome to be quite honest.

My problem is, is that I’m a pasty red head so driving down to and on a beach without a roof would probably end up in immolation which would really ruin the seats.

I burn easily, but it’s hot enough here during the summer that having a roofless is a good gamble. Plus which, my brother isn’t as light as I am.
