When I turned 16 there was rust free 1977 AMC Pacer for sale down the road from where I lived. It was blue, and had 4spd manual. I thought it was coolest thing ever, it had a Levis package. It was $1850. Why I did not buy it I don’t know, I think my dad told me I get my moms mini van for free as soon as I got my license.

That was the last time I ever saw a Pacer, I would have been a baller if I would have bought it.

When you think about it, the Pacer was the Juke of the 70s. The Ur-Juke if you will. Probably.

Oh, I like this game. Let’s see...when you turned 16, there was a rust-free 1977 AMC Pacer available. According to my math, you turned 16 in 1978.

2011 actually. Why Pacer was rust free after 35 years after it left the factory rust free defies me, but buyer must have not checked off the rust option on the build sheet.

I bet there are a few Oppos out there with a “one that got away” story like that.

I have two from around 1990-91.

When I was 17 I had a shot at a clean 70 Barracuda “Cuda” clone with a 440+6 4 speed for $2500. Dad said “it’s not original, it’ll never be worth anything”. A classmate bought it and still has it.

Also had a shot at a one owner, rust free 71 Duster /6 with 35,000 miles on it for $500. Shot down again. “It’s a six cylinder car. It’ll never be worth anything.” Another classmate bought it and still has it. It’s 440 powered now though.

I couldn’t wait till I hit 18 and didn’t need approval for a purchase anymore.

I have one more. It was a 2000 Firebird Trans Am WS6. 2.5 years ago, I just got a decent job, and needed a car. LS1, 6spd, rwd, what more could a young testosterone infused man need. I turned it down since it was ugly, I did not know the significance of the WS6 package at the time. Looking back at it I feel very stupid.

I don’t understand the “it’ll never be worth anything” part. How many kids’ first car will ever be worth anything anyways? Just getting something that has wheels and moves seemed to be the biggest motivator.

I still don’t understand the whole “value” thing from back then.

I missed out on a Buick Apollo and worst of all I got to see some other guy drive it around my town.

I don’t know if they were all “ones that got away”, but there were a few interesting ones.

- a black 1980 AMC Spirit AMX which I really liked that even had a manual, but it needed a new air pump. At the time I wasn’t that into working on cars and my stepdad was clueless about them too. Also it didn’t start when we went to see it.

- a 1977 VW Scirocco. Silver, which I didn’t like but I did like Sciroccos. Also didn’t start.

- a late ‘70s Plymouth Arrow pickup (aka Mitsubishi Mighty Max). This one still burns me. The seller put the ad in the paper and then refused to return calls. When my stepdad got someone on the phone, she wouldn’t give any details about it and gave all kinds of excuses why whatever time we wanted to look at it wouldn’t work for her. WTF? It wasn’t exactly cheap to advertise in a want ad back then.

- a weatherbeaten 1978 Subaru BRAT 4WD with a topper. Oh, I wish this one had been mechanically fine. This thing had a patina that would make all of Oppo swoon. But during the test drive every time my stepdad needed to shift he had to reach over and grab the shifter because it had flopped over toward the passenger side. Might have been an easy fix, but again neither of us knew anything about fixing cars.
