Dear Opponautland:

If you don’t own CO detectors and you burn fuel in winter, please go buy them immediately. If you do, please check and make sure they’re functional and within their expiration date. It hasn’t been a fun evening, but we’re fine tonight thanks to a half dozen detectors throughout our house.

Seconded. My Dad’s brother passed away when they were teenagers due to carbon monoxide in the house.

Carbon monoxide enters the bloodstream and immediately bonds with the oxygen in your red blood cells. You’re left with hardly any oxygen in your blood and carbon dioxide poisoning from the inside. Quite a gruesome killer it is. Glad you and your family are okay.

Thank you. I spent six years in the fire service, and my family has a long history therein. I don’t fuck around with life safety. The tragedies are just too easily preventable. It’s especially sobering to know that with level in my home what it was, I wouldn’t have woken up.

I’m sure the adrenaline will wear off eventually.

Similarly, don’t run generators inside your house during a power outage. Neighbors almost did themselves in by running theirs in the garage a few years back.

I guess I can understand why- perhaps they thought the garage was a sealed space. Tonight I was very surprised how quickly and evenly the CO spread throughout the house from the origin in the basement. Doors slow it down and create a little bit of a gradient from floor to floor, but levels in the house were uniformly high enough to kill.
