We’re into a new year so let’s investigate what’s been hot and not everywhere* in the world.
*everywhere I can find the figures in a language I have some vague hope of understanding
First off we’re going to the chilly north to Sweden. So, is this a country where everyone buys some variation on a Volvo theme?
Nej.
The Swedes like VWs. Here’s the top ten models for 2016, which was a record for both private and commercial vehicles.

3 VOLVO S/V60
4 VOLVO XC60
5 VW PASSAT
6 VOLVO V40N
7 TOYOTA AURIS
8 VW POLO
9 KIA CEE’D
10 SKODA OCTAVIA
Volvo are the biggest selling individual make but the VW Group are the largest group and increased their share from 26.9% in 2015 to 27.9% in 2016. What dieselgate?
What about the bottom of the table? Is snowy Sweden a place where Subarus are a thing? Not really, but their market share at 1.35% is much higher than in more temperate places. Cadillac? Ha, ha! 56 sold for 0.01%. Jeep? Down from 0.36 to 0.27%.
Trucks, in case you were wondering, are basically a Volvo/Scania duopoly with Merc following at 10%. Same applies for buses.
So what happened with diesels? Are the environmentally conscious Scandinavians turning to something cleaner and greener? Kind of. Diesel’s share of the car market went from about 58% to about 53%. Are buyers turning away from VW diesels (which remain on sale, Sweden isn’t America)? Yes, for the Golf and Passat. The Golf went from 27% diesel to just under 20%, the Passat went from 95% (yes, 95%) to 68%, but that’s because the hybridised and plug in GTE is a big seller.
Interestingly, two VW XL1s were sold.
Less interestingly, the Tesla Model S lost sales due to being cannibalised by the Model X.

Interesting that most of the cars listed would be considered “up market” in the us with the exception of the Golf, Toyota, Polo and C’d.

The V40 isn’t a very expensive car even in Sweden and the Passat is a fairly middle market model, but yes it’s a well off place and they do buy their own - to an extent. It is a bit of a surprise that the best selling Volvos are 70 and 90 models.

If with ‘most’ you mean the Volvos, than yes. The VWs, Kia and Skoda are not up market in any way and the older Volvos are only sub-luxury if you will. Only the new V90 and XC90 are ‘real’ luxury, but given that the Volvos are the only new domestics available to the Swedes their popularity is to be expected.
