So few weeks back, I received an email saying my Facebook account was re-activated. I thought it was junk mail as I did no such thing. Phishing/Scam/Virus etc. Ignored it.

Then I get an email from FB notifying me that one of my friends updated her photo. I thought it strange. Only if FB was actually active would I get a notification about it. So I attempted to login. Of course I can’t remember password for something I deactivated years ago. I went through a process of re-activating my account. It asked for ID. Since I want nothing to do with FB, last thing I want them to have is my ID.... so I uploaded some gibberish image below.

FB said it will review and get back to me.

Today, FB congratulated me on having my account re-opened. I logged in and de-activated it again.

I don’t know what just happened, but I changed all my passwords to password456 (not actual password)

Anyway - beware out there. someone is seriously hacking shit and it’s not funny anymore

It’s mostly easiere to social engineer stuff like that, talk to the sweet and clueless customer support, ask them to reopen your account, make up some excuses while sounding oblivious to technology, and there ya go, the nice support person will do it for you... Aka, humans are the weak link!

I had an old Yahoo email I’d use for job applications since my email address was just my first name and last name. I haven’t used it in well over a year and after the third “omg we have been hacked three years ago, please change your password” email, I deactivated it. Zero time for that crap.

Facebook periodically asks me to make my account more secure by linking my phone number to it. I always decline to do so. Then it started asking me more aggressively, by displaying the prompt every time I log in. When I’d access it on my phone, it would even “helpfully” autocomplete the text box with my phone number. One day, I logged into facebook on my phone and it had autocompleted a different number. One that was local, but that I didn’t recognize at all. And it wasn’t anyone in my contacts, either. Creepy as fuck. I changed my passwords.

I once set up a Facebook page just to find someone. Mission accomplished, and I couldn’t get FB to leave me alone. My spam filter handles it quite nicely now.

I would love it to be a FB ploy to get me back vs some Russki or Chineski hacking my shit.
