And that’s not the start of a joke. The parentals and I went to see Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them, and after we left the theatre we walked out to the car and a man who had parked next to us got out of his second gen Prius and asked if we could jump his car.
I had to politely decline him and appologize as we were driving the S600, and the owner’s manual strictly forbids jump starting other people’s cars, and that in the event of a dead battery in the S-Class, all effort should be made to jump it with a jump box or battery pack and not another vehicle due to the fragile nature of the car’s everything.
Though I still don’t quite understand how a car with THAT many batteries would need a jump.

My Volt has a regular 12V battery to power the accessories, lights/radio/relays etc. if the car is “off” it won’t charge the 12V system, it’s most definitely possible to need a jump. The good news is that it actually requires very little power to jump start, just enough to get the relay to flip on the high voltage to low voltage inverter, then it’s self sufficient again. I’m not sure if the Prius is as easy to jump, I would guess it is, but still not a bad idea to pass on it with that sensitive beast...

2nd gen Prii have separate electrical systems. His high voltage system can’t jump/charge the low voltage system.
A Mercedes can’t jump a car? What are they worried about?

My grandpa has a 3rd gen, 2010 with about 30k and his wouldn’t start. Turned out to just be the regular battery, not the hybrid battery, so I’m not sure how much of a role that the hybrid battery has on the starter.

I assume you can jump it.
Apparently the positive is in the fuse box because the 12V system is buried and just ground anywhere like usual

The voltage in an S600 is highly regulated and when you introduce an outside current supply it tends to dick the cars electronics.

12 volt battery boots the computers, computers turn on the high voltage system (which charges the 12 volt system).
Dead 12 volt (which is hard to detect on a Prius until it completely dies, although sometimes it’ll start acting really badly) means no high voltage.

We have a 2nd Gen Prius at work. It’s a stupid battery for cranking over the engine that’s hard to come by except ordering through Toyota, because it’s tiny (and I presume lightweight). And being a federal agency switching suppliers for things has a ton of hoops to jump through, which meant we were using batteries that were effectively lawn mower batteries in it, and it absolutely chewed through them. But yes, we often had to run it with a booster pack hooked up in the trunk (the battery is under the floor) because even with a boost from another vehicle the stupid thing doesn’t realize the battery is dead and always shuts itself down and then won’t restart because the useless battery is hosed again and the stupid thing gets all kinds of freaked out. Eventually the parts supplier was able to get us some kind of yellow-top optima that fits and I think it’s lasted a bit longer, but I didn’t work in the garage this summer and haven’t asked.

Most modern cars (read mid 2000's to now) prefer that you don’t jump cars. That’s probably why booster boxes have gotten popular.
