And, alongside it, the Razor.

The problem for all hopefuls in that market segment is that the Soul exists and it’s cheap. It’s hard to compete with the whole package that the Soul offers and as a result I believe it’s about the best car for average people sold today.

Here’s the thing, though. Dodge could totally build both of these cars with existing FCA platforms. The Hornet would take the place of the Dart and could use an updated, but not necessarily new, platform. The Hornet would be much more functional than the Dart, and fulfills that small CUV niche Dodge currently lacks.
The Razor could easily use the Alfa 4C platform, which would give FCA another car to spread out the costs of that chasis. Using the Darts 4 cylinder engine and transmissions, and lower cost interior, it may be possible to get the costs down to the mid $20K range, which would be competitive with other small, sporty cars, which Dodge sorely lacks.

I have a feeling the Calibers terrible sales had a lot to do with that. However looking at the success that the Soul has been, I think this could have worked. Of coarse for it to beat the Soul it would need to be as reliable as a Kia, which sadly wouldn’t have been the case.
