Kinja'd!!!

One of these recently came up for sale in my area and I was suddenly reminded that there existed Lancers other than the glory that is the Evolution. The one I saw I don’t remember the particulars on other than the automatic slushbox and 1.8 liter sewing machine under the hood. How bad are these as people-movers? Fairly sharp-looking little economy boxes (though I could do with a slight change of grille. Eugh) but they don’t seem to have sold very well.

Horrible, just get another Civic.

A worse 7th gen civic in every appreciable way. So that’s pretty bad. I knew two different people that had them and they at least seemed reliable. There is a wagon, and an OZ edition with different rims and steering wheel. As far as I know they share zero parts (maybe the door handles?) with the EVO other than name.

Isn’t reliability really the only relevant metric for a car like this?

But eugh. 7th gen Civic. “Let’s get rid of our awesome SLA suspension in favor of terrible MacPherson struts! Yay!”

They sold fine they just weren’t very robust. Which is pretty necessary when your target market is people who can’t afford new cars (as Mitsubishi’s was by the early 2000s)

I rented one of those on a business trip to San Diego in 2005. Even as a new car, it was a piece of crap. It was one of the worse cars I’ve ever driven. It reminded me a lot of a 1st gen Neon, but with less handling and power. It was, however, better than a Cavalier.

It’s not a good shitbox, it’s more a really bad shitbox. Neighbor had one her Chrysler sebring was more reliable than that heap.

The Chaplain at my college drove an OZ Rally Edition Lancer. The President drove an old Jag (don’t remember which) followed by a Crossfire SRT6.

Several bros in a silver, base model Lancer challenged me to a stoplight drag race when I was driving my Civic with my mom riding shot gun. I couldn’t decide whether I should laugh or ignore them.

My mother has an 06. It does econo-box things and has enough power to stay in the slow lane on the freeway. And it’s survived three-plus years of my mother beating on it, so that’s something.

(Knocking frantically on wood that this remains the case)

Kinja'd!!!

My mom recently bought a silver Oz Rally edition of similar vintage off of a customer, with the intent to fix and sell. It’s got no more go than the base Lancer but it has a five speed, nice wheels, and a subtle body kit.

I’m amused at the variety of responses I’m getting, from “My family member has one and it’s reliable” to “God what horrid pieces of shit”

Yeah but everyone has their own idea of that constitutes a “good” car. As far as I’m concerned with appliances like this the only real metric that matters is reliability. Following that, ease/cheapness of repair. In a distant third, fuel economy. “Handling” and “road feel” and “acceleration” are all meaningless noise in the world of the a-to-b motorized bubble.

Well if you do get and it decides to be a colossal turd do you lose significant money? If not I don’t see the harm.

Never mind the quality. If you buy this, you might as well quit as a car enthusiast.

I think it’s too old to have the unbelievably unresponsive global engine, so it’s probably a gdi, which means you’ll be replacing lifters. And even so, it wont be going anywhere in a hurry.

If i was in the market for a people mover, I wouldn’t want the people I’d be moving to be in a state of missery, so I’d probably get an old x300 shape xj6 or xj8 instead. Those are lovely to drive, being the last of the old jaaaag chassis, rather reliable, and so much car for the money.

I’d just daily my miata, which doesn’t really use any fuel, and live with the rubbish mpg of the jaaaaaag whenever i needed a back seat.

Let me just put it this way: while one may have some difficulty choosing between period Evolutions and WRX STIs, there should be no difficulty whatsoever choosing between a base Impreza and this.

96-99 Civic sedan is forever the ultimate economy car. Last one with SLA suspension, bulletproof D16Y7 or Y8 engine that makes adequate power, a typically Honda manual (aka you can beat the hell out of it) or an adequate slushbox, tons of room, great visibility, modern enough to have reasonable crash safety but old enough to be lightweight, STUPID cheap parts (entire bumper cover is $60 shipped last I checked).

On the downside, they’re getting hard to find because ricers and insurance is unusually expensive because, again, riceroni. And rust. Nothing is worse than a rusty EK except possibly a rusty EG. Ask me how I know.

Had one - a 2002 OZ. It was a perfectly acceptable car. I rather enjoyed it (though I upgraded to it from a 1987 Cavalier, so take that how you will).

I knew it leaked massive amounts of oil on the street and her final straw with it was the transmission.
