Just noticed that I haven’t created a post in 7 5 months! To rectify this, have the E39 covered in surprise snow.

Yeah, especially if you are planning a trip back to the UK and have to drive 500km on the Autobahn under time pressure. Hope it’ll be better by Sunday.

At least you have winter tires I assume. We don’t. And I have an important appointment in three weeks at a place with no public transport so I really hope it won’t snow.

I do, but they seem to be pretty crappy, at least as reasonable Autobahn speeds.

Aren’t they mandatory in Germany? I have this car with yellow plates, but I do have this green Umweltzone sticker and winter tires to please the German government. I am hapy with those tires though, I’m in München (technically Starnberger Kreis) right now and it’s surprise-white here too.

Which I wouldnt have to rely on these tires to get me back to the UK in a few days. And theres barely any snow ever in the UK :(

For a second I thought you were about to ask what an old 5-Series was.

Mandatory only in conditions like right now. Theoretically you could drive with summer tires all year if there’s no snow. Just don’t get in an accident without winter tires in the snow.

And that on a 20 (?) year old rwd car. My godfather totalled a then-new E46 in 2000 because he took a sharp bend too fast, now I couldn’t imagine driving a rwd car on the ‘Bahn in snowy weather. Maybe that’s because I don’t have much experience with rwd cars.

I think there aren’t too many somewhat modern cars left that I didn’t at least hear about once. :D

It really depends on the tire. My brother’s 525i didn’t seem to have any trouble with light snow at autobahn speeds at all, while mine was sliding its rear wheels about at the slightest touch of snow. Even though my tires were sold as “performance” winter tires and had enough tread left, they were pretty much useless. One of the reasons Im thinking about buying an A8 Quattro for the winter months, even if its overkill for the few weeks Im spending in Germany (theres barely any snow in North East England ever).

A winter car instead of winter tires isn’t actually that uncommon. At least two guys I know do this. I’d rather look for a better set of winter tires if there’s hardly any snow in your area and just spend a few weeks here.

Yeah, there’re definitely plenty of guys doing it here too (not in the UK). The road salt is the biggest reason to get something else though. After spending so much time and money on my cars (especially once everything is done, plenty planned for the BMW), I don’t wanna have to worry about them turning into piles of rust because of it. The A8 (and the ‘03+ XJ) is one of the very few affordable vehicles I’d wanna own where I won’t have to worry about this anymore.
