Kinja'd!!!

5000 miles ago, I got my oil changed at Jiffy Lube because lazy. So Yesterday, it was time to do another oil change. This time I’d do it myself. The oil filter was on so tightly that I thought it might have to be towed to a shop. I ended up drilling a screw into the side to try to gain some leverage. I twisted it so hard that I pulled the screw back out. Finally, all but defeated, I headed to AutoZone and bought a claw wrench. Even with the wrench, the thing only budged after I strained the shit out of my neck trying to get the damn filter loose.

0/10 would not lube in a jiffy again.

That’s pretty much par for the course at any lube place. The problem with Jiffy Lube is the Quaker State oil they use will form sludge incredibly readily. Ask me how I know.

One of the last vehicles I bought (cheap gov’t auction) the filter was not only ultra tight, but rusted. Nice job with my tax dollars gov’t. At least the motor looks like the oil was at least changed.

I like those strap type oil filter tools. The tighter you turn it the harder it grabs and crushes the filter.

It is something I’ll definitely not do again!

Yeah, using the claws the poor filter looked like a crushed soda can by the end of it

When I had the room on an F150, I hammered a big screwdriver through my filter and used that leverage to take it off. Thing was ON THERE.

I had them replace the transmission fluid before a long trip I was taking. They didn’t put any in, just emptied it, and my transmission blew up. I tried to prove it was their fault, but I couldn’t beat them in court. Never use Jiffy Lube, they suck.

The next time this happens try two wrenches of any type. Twin straps or a strap and an end cup type. A claw and a strap, whatever. Its worked for me before by distributing pressure on more that one area.

Holy crap... yeah that’s the kind of stuff I’m afraid of. I measured the oil that they put in once I drained it. Thankfully it was the correct 6 quarts.

I’d rather top off the engine oil with ATF and keep driving until I get a chance to do a proper oil change than risk letting a quick lube joint near my car.

Not only is that on par with every other lube shop, that’s basically par for the course for almost every technician out there. They don’t give a shit and it seems most were never taught the correct way to tighten oil filters. Once the seal touches you only go 1/4 to maybe 1/2 a turn more. And for the love of God you don’t use fucking pliers or other tools to TIGHTEN the filter.

Filters always glue themselves I anyway. I’ve yet to have one leak, and I only put them on finger tight... with the oil that gets on there when you pull it, or the finger smear if it’s vertical, it’ll crank down pretty good with not much torque, so they’re still a bigger to get off.

The MJ needs oil changed this week... I realized a few days ago I never changed it since the Lemons Rally. Shoulda changed it when I got back but put it off because of winter approaching for the switch to 5w40, so it’s got around 7500km on that 15w40 Rotella from Fallon, NV. Oops.

Normally I can get them off with a grippy pair of gloves, but this thing was “stop-the-earth-on-it’s-axis” tight lol

That’s what I fear they did. Not to mention the cheap ass filter they put on in the first place. The weird thing about the Cyclone V6 in my experience is you’ll get a weird rattling noise from the oil filter unless you use the Ford-recommended Motorcraft FL-500S. I learned that a couple years ago when I stuck a FRAM (I know) on it.

Lol funny story. I’d never been there before so when I went in I parked in the lot. I guess I was waiting for someone to ask me to pull the car around, but I sat there for 15 minutes without knowing you just pull the car up to the entrance and leave the key in the ignition. Remind me of Jiffy Lube if I ever mention wanting to steal a car...

Yeah cheap ass oil filters are cheap for a reason. I know some manufacturers actually have tsb’s (technical service bulletins) saying you will have problems of you don’t use a genuine filter.

Yeah that’s no bueno. I have a full shitload of extra screwdrivers and other extra tools that I got for free. So some of them have been repurposed as specialty tools. I braised a drumkey onto a quick lock bit for my drill, for example.

Without a lift I find it almost impossible to get enough purchase on a filter to turn it by hand when it’s tight. Well, my MJ’s pretty good, and so is the Niva, but for example the Chevy venture 3.4L I did today? There’s a A/C line and a power steering line (both hard) preventing you from getting at it from the top, and there’s only one good path to get at it from below and it’s almost impossible to orient yourself properly to get your hand in there while lying on your back.

I just changed the MJ’s oil. I’m just under 8000km on the old stuff... Oops. Figured I’d do it as soon as I got home with the goods, even if it was pitch black and -12°F with -25 windchill, and it meant lying on my back in the snow cause the Niva’s occupying the garage space.

I feel your pain. With the Mustang, you can sort of get to it from the top, but your probably gonna make a mess. There’s only one way to get to it by jacking it up and even then it’s annoying because of the big plastic wind deflector thing you have to pull down so that it hangs.
